Maersk will continue to divert Gulf ships from Aden and the Red Sea to southern Southern Africa, although the Yamen Hethis have announced they will reduce ship strikes, the container shipping giant said on Friday.
The Danish shipping company said the Iranian-backed militant group’s announcement was “a very welcome step in the right direction for the stability and eventual normality of the global shipping sector.”
However, the company said the safety risk for commercial vessels transitioning between the Red Sea and the Bab-El-Mandeb Strait remains high.
“With this in mind – and the safety of our crew, ships and its cargo are our top priority – Maersk will continue to sail to Africa via Cabo da Boa Esperança until safe passage in the area is guaranteed in the long term “, he said .
