Abel Ferreira comments on the defeat against Novorizontino and the end of the contract with Palmeiras: ‘My last year in Brazil’

Verdão opened the scoring, but was defeated by Novorizontino in the second half

This Saturday (25th), Palmeiras hosted Novorizontino at the Arena Barueri for the 4th round of the Campeonato Paulista and, in turn, was defeated 2-1. Coach Abel Ferreira commented in the press conference on the team’s failures in the second phase of the match and highlighted the drop in performance, as well as coming to Barros’ defense and reinforcing the end of his contract with the club.

“We only scored one goal, but we could have scored one more to get to half-time calmly. After the penalty, we failed a lot with our passes,” said the coach. “I attribute a lot to the physical decline, but the second half wasn’t what we expected. We didn’t create any chances. It was the opposite of a great first half and a terrible second half,” concluded Abel Ferreira.

The coach has clarified his rotation strategy since Paulistão’s first match, against Portuguesa. Abel observes the team divided into two teams, one with the star of the season Estevão and one without, with the idea of prioritizing that all players have the same opportunities at the beginning of 2025.

“No, I’m the coach and I’m the one who chooses,” the coach stressed regarding Estevão’s lack of involvement in the match. “I also believe that both teams have had opportunities to play, then it’s up to me to choose the players who I think are best suited to the disputes”

At the end of the match, fans chanted against the club’s board of directors, the protest was “shameful” for the management, calling Barros the “stupidest” manager in Brazil. Abel came to Anderson Barros’ defense after criticism.

“Every time they do it, they whistle at our coat of arms. We are talking directly about Barros, 11 titles. Almost 400 million euros in turnover, Palmeiras was in debt when I arrived, a shame. We couldn’t buy players. It was not possible pay everyone. President, players, coach and Barros, all together, we are one of the most prestigious teams internationally and nationally. That’s why it is so difficult to negotiate with Palmeiras,” the coach said. “I’m going to my last year in Brazil and every year we’ve had good and bad times,” he added.

Before the match, Leila Pereira, president of the club, had made clear her desire to renew with Abel Ferreira, but that negotiations have not yet started.

The coach took advantage of the press conference to add the need to sign a defender for the team following the departure of Vitor Reis.

Palmeiras returns to action on Tuesday against Red Bull Bragantino at 7.30pm (Brasilia time) at Allianz Parque.
