The President of the United States Donald Trump said he spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping since he came into office on January 20, but did not provide details on the topics of the conversation.
Trump made the comments in an interview with Fox News, aired on Monday.
“Yes … I also spoke to him and his staff,” Trump said when he was asked if he spoke to the Chinese leader from his inauguration.
“We have an excellent personal relationship,” added Trump.
The president did not provide details on when exactly the call happened or on what was discussed.
Trump said last week that he was in no hurry to talk to Xi to try to contrast a new commercial war between the two major economies in the world. A conversation between XI and Trump is considered crucial for the possible flexibility or postponement of commercial rates.
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the Trump interview with Fox News.
Trump and Xi spoke shortly before Trump came into office on January 20 and discussed issues such as Tiktok, Comércio and Taiwan.
If requested in a press conference on Tuesday to confirm the connection mentioned by Trump, the Foreign Ministry China did not comment directly directly this, however, referred to the “scheduled” call before Trump came into office.
“On January 17th, President Xi Jinping had a planned phone call with President Trump and the Chinese part has already released the relevant press release,” said Jiakun, spokesperson for the Ministry.
China imposed tariffs targeted on US imports last week and has placed several companies, including Google from Alphabet, with a warning for possible penalties, in response to the 10% Trump rate on Chinese products, which marked at previous rates.
