‘This Is Us’, the explained ending of the series in season 6: where do the Pearsons end up?

This has been the outcome of the history of the Pearson family. Prepare the Kleenex.

Spoilers for the ending of ‘This Is Us’ below.

I got there first, and Dad said, “Wow.”
And then I came in, and mom was like, “Wee!”
And then I came, and they told me: “There are three of them. The Big Three!”.”

From the moment this series began (available in full in Spain on Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video), ‘This Is Us’ has been an expert in intertwining the past and the present. She offered us family moments to make us think, make us angry and, above all, to make us cry. And along the way, as the “big three” learned valuable life lessons, we were there to learn alongside them.

The final episode of the series is a perfect culmination, although it relies more on moments of vital teaching than on tears. And it works amazingly well.

‘This Is Us’ has always existed in a world very close to ours: it is not perfect or free from our evils, but it is from many of them. This final episode simply focuses on how life unfolds, as it flows through time passages with the protagonists., his memories and a vision of Rebecca’s funeral. That, now too, has become a memory.

And while a large part of the ending takes place during this moment, it’s not the focus of the episode. A look back to find memories and a look towards the horizon to see what life can bring: that is the center of everything. Not Rebecca being buried.

A key moment of the beginning: Jack and Bec are in bed, as we last saw them in the previous episode. Except they’re not on the train, this is a true flashback. The light illuminates Rebecca’s face in just the right way so that Jack can notice something he’s never seen before: a small scar just below her eyebrow. Her wife tells a story about how she got it when she was a child on the playground with her father. But it’s not so much the how that catches his attention.

Young Rebecca was being pushed on the swing by her father, and instead of enjoying the moment, she found herself worrying about when it would all end… This was an important idea for the end of the series and, in certain aspects, of life.

This slow-paced, narrative-free episode was meant to serve as a reminder that we must savor the small moments and reflect fondly on the past that has led us to the present. Because many of us forget; many of us are too busy rushing through life. Sometimes when we think about tomorrow, we forget to savor today.

The final episode in all its stillness serves as a lesson for the viewers, as well as a love note for the Pearsons.

justin hartley as kevin, chrissy metz as kate, sterling k brown as randall, this is us, season 6, episode 18 finale

Some of the highlights of the episode include touching moments between Randall and Beth, where she once again stands her ground, proving to be very supportive of him, a much-needed resolve between Kate and Toby, and a joking thank you to Kevin from Nicky. And also future news for Deja and Randall.

At one point, Kate and Kevin join Randall on the cabin steps. Kevin notices Randall’s glow at Deja’s good news, to which Randall replies: “I have received very good news on a very sad day”which aggravates the theme of the passage of time, and with sadness comes the passage of the torch and something new, happy and exciting can emerge.

Kevin regrets that they no longer have either of their parents. Randall tells her that’s not true, that they will always have them, but that doesn’t change that strong feeling of loss. Kate fears they will start drifting apart, living separate lives now that her mother is gone. What will bring them together? His brothers are quick to remind him that their bond, stronger than ever, is what will bind them together forever..

So just before the series comes to an end, audiences are reassured that their favorite characters will always be there to help. Realistically, things don’t necessarily always work that way, and drift is sometimes just a natural occurrence with no malicious intent. But we know they’ll make sure they’ll try, keeping the family traditions and passing on the stories for which the younger generations who were not present.

Deja tells Randall that she is naming their son after William, a man she has never met, but knows: “I know him because I know you.” The episode and series end at the funeral meal, with the brothers watching the children play..

The series closes by approaching Randall as he flashes back to that lazy Saturday where Jack and Rebecca and the kids were hanging out, watching home movies and playing pin the tail on the donkey. As Kate and Kevin play and fight, Jack watches from the couch. A young Randall sits next to him, and they share a knowing smile before we return to today’s Randall, who watches his family with a small smile of quiet contemplation.

As far as series endings go, though moderate and modest, this one was solidly done, a fitting end to this series. It was perfect. Perfectly Pearson. Oh, and if they make a spin off With Dulé Hill’s character and that family, it’s safe to say we’re all up for it. As long as it doesn’t conflict with ‘The Wonder Years’, of course.
