The first part of Visitors, released in 1993, was a huge hit at the French box office, accumulating more than 13 million copies. Its sequel, The Visitors 2 – The Corridors of Time, released in 1998, attracted more than 8 million. Since then, Jean-Marie Poiret and Christian Clavier have been thinking about a third opus of the adventures of Jacqueville and Godefroy. In the meantime, they are devoting themselves to the American adaptation of the first film, resulting in guests in America.
This remake is a resounding commercial failure, weighing heavily on Gaumont’s accounts. This disappointment then buried the project for more than a decade. Finally, in 2016, Jean-Marie Poiret and Christian Clavier completed a new scenario in which two heroes are trapped during the French Revolution, Total Terror: The Visitors – Revolution.
Reuniting early fans and neophytes alike, the film’s cast includes Frank Dubosky, Sylvie Testud, Alex Lutz, Frederic Bell, Laurent Deutsch, Pascal Nzonzi and Karin Viar.
With a budget of 25 million euros, the production expects to receive at least 5 million theaters to make it profitable. So much so that with over 2 million admissions, the film was a commercial failure—and a critical failure (“(…) a frankly disappointing film, with an unstable script, laborious staging, terrible aesthetics.(quoting Le Monde). Its average audience rating of 1.5 out of 5 on AlloCiné testifies to the public’s distaste for this superfluous component…
