The Mpox epidemic is still an emergency for public health, said the World Health Organization Thursday.
The WHO, which declared the emergency for the first time in August last year, said that his decision was based on the continuous increase in the number of cases of Mpox and on the geographical diffusion of the epidemic.
The agency added that also the violence in the East of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which made its response plan difficult, was a factor.
An emergency for public health of international interest is the highest form of Who Alert and is declared by the general manager of the agency after the guidance of a group of external experts. A different form of Mpox was also classified as an emergency in 2022-2023.
The new form of Mpox, CLADE IB, continues to mainly the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but also Uganda and Burundi have been significantly affected, according to a recent WHO report. The cases relating to travel were also recorded in countries such as Thailand and the United Kingdom.
On a global level, more than 21,000 cases have been confirmed by the laboratory tests since the beginning of 2024, including 70 dead, especially in Congo, according to WHO. Last year over 50,000 suspicious cases were reported and more than 1,000 deaths. The confirmation of the case was a challenge in the areas with less capacity.
Mpox is a viral infection that spreads through close contact and usually causes symptoms similar to the influence and lesions filled with PUS. It is usually light, but it can be lethal.
