Cinemadolescence: How the Netflix series records episodes in a non-cutting-cutting digital cuts

British production uses technique to create tension and realism

The British miniseries Adolescencefrom the Netflixdrew attention for his bold cinematic approach: each episode was filmed in a single sequence plan, no invisible cuts or digital editing to unite different takes.

The production of four episodes follows Jamie Millera 13 -year -old who is arrested on suspicion of murdering a classmate. The plot unfolds in real time, showing from the police approach to the protagonist’s investigation and interrogation.

The director Philip Barantiniknown for his continuous filming style, he worked alongside the director of photography Matthew Lewis to capture the narrative without interruption.

“There is no take seam. It was a single outlet from start to finish, whether I wanted or not”confirmed Lewis to Variety.

As Adolescence Was it filmed?

To maintain the authenticity of the sequence plan, the team adopted a strategy that combined precise choreography, planned camera movement and strategic scenario location. Unlike other productions that use editing tricks to simulate sequence plans, AdolescenceHe chose to capture everything continuously.

The first scene, which shows the police invasion of Jamie’s house, had to be meticulously rehearsed.

“We worked as in a dance: the camera moved in tune with the actors. Every detail was planned so that everything flowed without cuts”explained Lewis.

Another challenge was to shoot the second episode, which takes place at a school and involves several children. To ensure the organization, the institution’s own teachers acted as direction assistants, helping to coordinate the extras.

“It was a real organized chaos. The whole school was involved for the scene to work”said the director of photography.

The technical challenge behind the sequence plan

To avoid excessive use of cameras in hand, which could make the experience tiring for the viewer, the team chose to shoot with a DJI RONIN 4Da state -of -the -art stabilizer.

“We tested several options, and this was the best to ensure softness in the movements, and allows the camera to be passed between operators discreetly.”explained Lewis.

In the third episode, which focuses on Jamie’s interrogation, the team had to find ways to maintain tension without major camera travel. “Sequence plans work better with movement, but this scene was going on in an interrogation room. We needed to create tension without seeming that the camera was floating for no reason.”said Lewis.

The solution was to synchronize camera movements with small characters, such as taking a glass of water or moving the notebook. “Each microgesto gave a reason to change framing without breaking realism”added the director of photography.

“The only additions of visual effects were for moments impossible to film, like a scene where we passed a window. But other than that, everything was captured continuously.”guaranteed Lewis.
