The president of the United States Donald Trump and Prime Minister Mark Carney had a conversation on Friday, both described as productive, even if the Canadian leader said that Ottawa will impose the retaliation rates next week, as promised.
The call was the first contact since Carry won the leadership of the Canadian liberals on March 9. Carney said that the Trump threat of rates is a betrayal of an economic and security relationship once restricted.
“It was an extremely productive connection, we agreed many things and we will meet immediately after the next Canada elections to work on politics, business and all other factors,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
This work “will end up being excellent for both the United States and Canada,” he added.
Thursday, Carry promised to transform Canada’s economy to be less dependent on the United States. The announcement on Trump rates is scheduled for April 2nd. Ottawa has clarified for months that it will impose contract.
“The prime minister informed the president that his government will implement retaliation rates to protect Canadian workers and our economy after the announcement of the United States further commercial actions on April 2, 2025,” said the meat office in a note.
The United States and Canada have been allies close and a long time ago. However, the relationships deteriorated after Trump, who came into office in January, broke the relationships with the threats of the rates and repeated comments on the analysis of the country.
Trump referred to Carney as Canadian Prime Minister and not as a governor of the 51st state of the United States, a term he used to describe the former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Carryy said that the two leaders agreed to start global negotiations on a new economic and security relationship immediately after the elections of April 28.
