‘We thought it was going to be a disaster’: Stranger Things team believed Netflix series would be canceled after season 1

Guest on the set of the program On BBC’s The One Show, which aired on July 25, David Harbor revealed how he began to lose hope for the future of Stranger Things in the middle of filming the first season, comments also reported by Insider and Variety.

I remember filming the first season. We were in Atlanta, Netflix gave us a budget of about $20“, he said. “I remember halfway through filming episode 4 my hair stylist came up to me and she was like, “I don’t think this is going to work.”

When we finished it, I thought we weren’t going to get a second season, that we were going to be almost the first Netflix show not to get a second season. We thought that if no one watched the series, it would be a disaster. -David Harbor

But luckily for him — and us — the actor was far from the truth. The fourth season of Stranger Things, which just premiered on Netflix, broke records this summer and became the platform’s biggest English-language TV season in history.

Even though the show will end at the end of its 5th season, however, Netflix will keep the Stranger Things franchise alive. Creators Matt and Ross Duffer are indeed working on a spin-off series, while a play set in the same world and involving the same mythology is in the works.

In an interview earlier this summer, the Duffer Brothers said their idea for a spin-off wouldn’t center on a pre-existing character. “It’s not the next… I’ve read these rumors that there’s going to be an Eleven spin-off, there’s going to be a Steve and Dustin spin-off or it’s going to be some other issue. It’s not interesting to us because we’ve done it all. We don’t know how many hours we spent researching everything. So it’s very different“- he told the next duo.

And then a spin-off on Hopper? Even if the show’s producers decide to go in that direction, the actor would love to see another actor portray the now-iconic character.

At this point, I think Hopper is a character that can exist independently of me.“, he told GQ magazine. “If they want to go back in time, forward in time… I’d like to see another actor play Hopper and see what he can bring…And David Harbor even made a choice about who could play young Hopper: Jacob Ellord, star of Euphoria and Kissing Booth.

I think as soon as the series ends, or maybe six months before it ends, you’ll hear about the spin-offs that we have planned.“Only time will tell.

Meanwhile, Season 4 of Stranger Things is a must-watch or review on Netflix.
