Francisco was the first Pope of this century to be buried outside the Vatican. Before him, seven other Popes were buried in the same Basilica, being the last Clement IX in 1669. The sculptor and architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini, author of the colonnade of San Pietro’s Square, is also buried.
Jorge Bergoglio, the name of Francisco, chose the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore for his strong devotion for the Virgin Mary. In life, the pontiff visited the temple more than a hundred times to say his prayers.
