In the final episodes of Un Si Grand Soleil, Clement married Janet (Tonia Kinzinger), but then had an affair with his ex-wife, Claudine (Catherine Wilkening). During the party, when the two women met in front of him, we felt some discomfort in Becker, because Janet does not know about his betrayal…
Yvonne Beck: Absolutely. And he doesn’t know it, of course. Claudine knows this – well, I hope she remembers! (laughs)
Will he finally find out?
This is a question that authors should ask. I do not know. For now, this story is on hold. I still have some scenes with Claudine that are fun to shoot because Becker is uncomfortable with it. He develops a kind of guilt, and then we build a relationship between them where Claudine is now a little intimidating to him. But I imagine they will use it at some point…
Becker has also recently invested a lot in protecting his daughter Sabine, who was involved in an accident… Seeing her bond with her family deepen also allows the character to take the character out of the professional framework.
Yes, the office sequence, with the judge, which still represents sixty percent of what I do. And then playing with Gaela Le Devehat is a joy, because apart from being a great actress, she’s a really nice girl. I’m not opposed to the footage being somewhere other than Becker’s office.
Enzo (Teilo Azais) falls in love with Aurora, who dies during an investigation that goes wrong. Can you tell us more? Will he blame Becker for the tragedy he failed to prevent?
Indeed, this girl is killed in the arena of Lunell, where we shot for the occasion. It will be a very good sequence. And indeed, Enzo holds his grandfather, who actually manipulated her and wished her harm, partially responsible for this girl’s death. For now, we are there. I believe the writers have an idea to develop a somewhat conflicted relationship with Becker, Florent and his family as well, as he holds us responsible for the death of this woman he loved.
Will your character investigate this case despite his family connection to Enzo?
so no until he dies I’m not participating in the survey because I’m really too invested in it. In the sequence that takes place in the Lunell arenas, we want to stop them, Enzo finds out about this fake meeting we set up to trap them. Then he goes to the crime scene and I try to stop him.
What awaits your character in the following scenarios?
There I am very much on new police investigations. We have a few little sequences with Janet, I have other sequences where I ride a bike with Frederik van den Driesche (Allen, editor’s note) and a bit of jogging, a birthday… but we are not with Tonya at the moment. You will not have a more developed plot.
How do you see your character evolving since coming to the series? He was a simple policeman, and then he gradually became fleshed out with family and love stories…
I’ve never done a TV series before doing this one, and it’s a little bit special coming into a project like this because you don’t know what to expect. I had a vision of the character in two sessions, which isn’t saying much. Thomas de Matisse (series producer, editor’s note) told me about the project, but nothing more. And slowly it was built.
I think before the writers develop a character, they certainly have ideas, but they wait for the portrayal and what the chosen actor is going to do. It went well for me, they were happy to be there and I got into the character pretty quickly. Suddenly there is a kind of porosity between what I bring and what they offer.
That’s exactly what we like about Becker: he can be someone very straight and true to the police, there’s always a bit of humor that comes out of him.
Yes, I was the one who brought up that little ironic distance. I had no idea who Becker was in the soap opera at first. And at one point, because I was a little worried, I decided to bring some to me. I took this liberty, they liked it, and then they wrote according to what I could offer. In the series, I think the actors have to offer personal things at some point, definitely.
