There is something about historical dramas that really captures the audience. First ‘Game of Thrones’ and now ‘The Last Kingdom‘. The final season premiered on Netflix in March 2022. Between its immersive fight scenes, incorporation of true historical events, and gripping plot, it’s easy to see why fans are already asking, when is season 6 coming?

Now in its fifth season, the Netflix show is sadly coming to an end. the main actor Alexander Dreymon shared this trailer with fans on Instagram shortly before the season 5 premiere, and let’s just say there was a mix of excitement and sadness.

“I do not want it to end 😢,” one person said. Fans may be surprised to hear that the decision to end the show in its fifth season was meant to happen from the start. Because the show is based on ‘The Saxon Stories’ by Bernard Cornwell, the creators always knew that the show would naturally follow the progression of the books. When the show premiered in 2015, the author was still writing the last three books in the series: ‘War of the Wolf‘ (2018), ‘Sword of Kings‘ (2019) and ‘war lord‘ (2020).

So what’s next for the characters of ‘The Last Kingdom’?

Before you pound your fists on the table, rest assured this is not the end of the road for Uhtred of Bebbanburg’s quest to unite kingdoms. fans can wait a Netflix movie covering the last three books in the series titled ‘Seven Kings Must Die’.

In an interview with the Radio Times, executive producer Nigel Marchant mentioned, “Season 5 feels like the end of the TV series, and the movie will be a lot more stand-alone. It will be an added treat for fans of the series, but you can also watch it even if you’ve never seen the show.”

With Uhtred’s battle for Bebbanburg behind him and ever closer to fulfilling his father’s goal of uniting England, Season 5 seems to end with everything resolved, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Fans can expect the film to bring the last three ‘The Saxon Stories’ novels to life. With an enraged king and a growing family, things are far from over for Uhtred’s journey.

When is ‘Seven Kings Must Die’ released?

Filming for ‘Seven Kings Must Die’ ended in March 2022 and it only took 2 months to shoot. Fans can expect the movie to hit Netflix sometime in late 2022 and 2023.

Uhtred Alexander Dreymon shared this heartfelt goodbye on social media after finishing ‘The Last Kingdom’:

They say that “all good things must come to an end” and while we know that the story of the unification of England will come to a satisfying end with the release of the film, we will miss escaping to the world of ‘The Last Kingdom’.
