The suspension occurs after the first focus on the influence of Aviance with high pathogenicity (IAPP, H5N1) on a commercial poultry production farm in Montenegro, a municipality in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre (RS) confirmed by the minister on Friday, 16.
“In order to adopt all possible measures to avoid the entry of the disease in Japan, the import of living birds in the state of Rio Grande do Sul was temporarily suspended on Friday 16 May 2025 and temporarily suspend the import of fresh meat and fresh eggs in the city of Montenegro”, the note.
According to the folder, the Brazilian health authority reported an outbreak of avian influence in a unit of poultry in Montenegro. “The import of living birds, poultry meat, fresh shell eggs, among others, by affected countries or regions is suspended to prevent living birds that in Japan were infected by the virus, not for reasons of food hygiene”, the declaration.
The regionalization of restrictions is provided for in the health certificate agreed between Brazil and Japan. In July last year, Japan agreed to regionize the IAP protocol by Municipality, as proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture. With this, the embargo with chicken meat imported from Brazil will be limited only to municipalities with confirmed cases of voter influence.
Japan is the third main destination of the Brazilian chicken, equal to 8.8% of total exports to Brazil in 2024. Last year, Brazil exported 422.979 thousand tons of chicken meat in Japan, with income of $ 855.746 million. From January to April of this year, the shipments of chicken meat in Japan totaled 123.169 thousand tons, with a total of US $ 237.321 million, according to the compiled numbers of Agrostat: system of commercial statistics of Brazilian foreign agro.
According to the data of the Ministry of Finance of Japan, released in the declaration, in 2024 Japan imported 451,712 tons of poultry meat in Brazil, in a total of 1,160 million tons imported from the country of all origins. From living girls, Japan purchased 30,896 thousand tons of Brazil out of a total of 299.419 thousand tons. Already from eggs the Japanese import in Brazil has reached 1,293 thousand tons of a total and 24,983 thousand tons.
The Ministry of Agriculture was already considering Japan between destinations with restrictions on exports of poultry products to Brazil. In addition to the regional suspensions of purchases through Japan, chicken and derivative exports throughout the Brazilian territory are suspended in China, the European Union, Canada, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico and South Korea, according to a survey by the Ministry of Agriculture.
