The lawyer can be penalized for mentioning a false case with the use of the AI, he warns the UK judge

Lawyers who use artificial intelligence to mention non -existent cases can be accused of contempt for the Court or even to face criminal accusations, the Superior Court of London, in the last example of use of the area that has induced errors professionals, warned on Friday.

A senior judge criticized the lawyers who apparently used in two cases tools to prepare written topics, which referred to false jurisprudence. He asked the regulators and leaders in the sector who guarantee lawyers to know their ethical obligations.

“There are serious implications for the administration of justice and for the trust of the public in the judiciary if artificial intelligence is used improperly,” said judge Victoria Sharp to a written decision.

“In these circumstances, the practical and effective measures should now be adopted by those who are within the legal profession with the responsibility of individual leadership … and by those who have the responsibility to regulate the supply of legal services”.

The decision was made after lawyers around the world were forced to explain themselves for having relying on false elements as long as chatgpt and other artificial intelligence tools have become widely available.

Sharp warned in his sentence that lawyers who refer to non -existing cases violate his duty not to deceive the court, which can also be considered disagreement with the Court.

He added that “in the most serious cases, the deliberate positioning of false material before the Court with the intention of interfering with the administration of the Court is equivalent to the criminal offense of perverting the course of justice”.

Sharp stressed that the legal regulators and the judiciary have issued a guide on the use of the AIn by lawyers, but said that “the guide alone is insufficient to face the abuse of artificial intelligence”.
