Actor James Franco was cast in the film “Alina of Cuba” in the role of Fidel Castro.
The casting represents a return to acting for an actor, who will also play the post-war drama “Me, You” by Danish director Bille August. Since he was accused of abuse and prosecuted in 2019 on charges of sexual exploitation of young women who attended his acting classes, he has been barred from acting. The trial was resolved last year and little by little Franco is starting to resume his career.
In “Alina of Cuba”, he will work with Spanish director Miguel Bardem (“Uncautos”) on a story based on true events. It is an adaptation of the autobiographical book “Castro’s Daughter: An Exile’s Memoir of Cuba”, written by Alina Fernandez.
The plot of the book follows the extraordinary life of Alina, daughter of Fidel Castro and Cuban socialite Natalia “Naty” Revuelta, born in secret in Cuba three years before her father took power in the country. She did not find out who her daughter was until she was 10 and fled the country as a dissident in 1993, disguised as a Spanish tourist.
The film will detail parts of Alina’s childhood and escape, with a screenplay written by Puerto Rican José Rivera (“Motorcycle Darios”) and Cuban Nilo Cruz, the first Pulitzer Prize-winning Latin American, for the play. ” Anna in the Tropic “. (2002).
The cast also includes actress Mia Maestro (“The Strain”) as Revuelta and Ana Villafañe (“New Amsterdam”) as Alina Fernandez.
Filming will begin on August 15 in Colombia, in the regions of Cartagena and Bogotá.
