The French socialists presented a vote of distrust against Prime Minister François Bayrou after the inability of the pension negotiations, said a senior party parliamentarian on Tuesday, but it seems unlikely that he is approved after the extreme right indicated that he would not have supported the measure.
On Monday they broke the negotiations of the month between French unions and employers on the reforms of the social security system, which led Bayrou to recall both sides for the conversations to find a way to go on.
The failure of these negotiations makes Bayrou vulnerable, like its central government, which brings together the ensemble (together) alliance of President Emmanuel Macron and the conservative Republicans, can fall at any time if the left and far -right parties join to support a defiant motion.
This is also a bad omen for what will probably be even more difficult negotiations on the 2026 budget law, with the government trying to impose 40 billion euros on shopping cuts.
Boris Vallaud, leader of the socialists in the Baixa Chamber, told the Parliament that Bayrou had not kept his promise to present a new project of social security reform to Parliament.
“This forces us to present a motion of censorship,” Vallaud said.
The French Party France was previously supported the idea of a vote of trust, but without the support of the National Reunion of the far right (RN) of Marine Le Pen, the measure seems unlikely to approve.
Gaëtan Dussusaye, an RN parliamentarian, said that the RN did not try to overturn the government and Le Pen did not mention such a measure when it went to Parliament.
“We have not censored at all, but that’s exactly what the left proposes here,” said Dussusaye.
Bayrou is in a situation similar to that of the previous Prime Minister Michel Barnier, whose three -month government was supported by RN until he supported a distrust measure in December due to his 2025 budget law, which strengthened the belt.
In Parliament, Tuesday, Bayrou said he is still convinced that “there is a way, although very difficult, that can make us get out of this impasse”.
In what has been announced as a conversation of the last occasion, the negotiators have not been able to achieve an agreement on how to change an unpopular renewal of the 2023 pension system which will gradually increase the retirement age from 62 to 64 years.
The unions wanted to allow workers with physically exhausting jobs to withdraw previously and give more weight to maternity leave, while the employers were cautious about the concessions that could weigh on the finance of the system.
Bayrou, a politician from the center and an old debit hawk, had asked for negotiations between unions and employers in an attempt to prevent socialists from removing their support on his part.
