HBO Max free? The company explores streaming with ads

The future of HBO Max is already set, with the Discovery + merger scheduled for 2023, but Warner Bros. Discovery is also exploring other growth options, including offering its content on a free, ad-supported streaming or TV service. known as FAST

The Warner Bros. Discovery idea is launching this content-rich service from its brand portfolio to complement the premium subscription service.

But first, the company will merge HBO Max and Discovery +, on a single platform, of which it is not yet known for sure what name it will have, prices and plans, or how the transition will work for those already subscribed to HBO Max and Discovery +. around the world.

This will happen in the United States in a window that spans the North American summer, which runs from June to September, arriving in Latin America between September and December, and in other territories including Europe in 2024.

David Zaslav, head of Warner Bros. Discovery, said on the company’s second quarter earnings call that when the on-demand service that integrates HBO Max and Discovery + as one of a kind is “firmly established in the market, we see a real potential and we are exploring the opportunity for a FAST. ” [serviço de TV gratuito suportado por anúncios]or free ad-supported streaming.

According to Zaslav, offering this “would give consumers who do not want to pay a subscription fee, access to a large catalog of content”. He added that this ad-supported service would act as a “gateway” to sell the paid HBO Max and Discovery + combination to consumers.

However, Warner Bros. Discovery does not intend to offer the entire catalog and the service “would be totally different from the content offered in the premium subscription on demand,” said JB Perette, president and CEO of streaming and games of Warner Bros. Discovery. “There’s a lot of content that wouldn’t necessarily make sense in a premium product that might make sense” for free, in the ad-funded streaming range, he added.

Finally, Perette said Warner Bros. Discovery will provide more details on these possible free TV or streaming plans with ads in late 2022.
