When ugly steps are presented in the revision of the Sundance Festival, in January 2025, a member of the community relied on vomiting in the alley of the movie theater. Emily Blichfeldt’s film’s career, 34 -year -old Norwegian, is created and benefits, as well as other recent shocks from the already sulfur reputation.
This feature film is approaching Cinderella’s tale with a new look: one of the two half derses ready to do everything to correct her appearance and attract the prince’s gaze. Then starts a real nightmare for Elvira (Leah Mienne), who is determined to inflict all the suffering in the fortress.
We think, of course, named Coralie FARGEAT, the horror of the body five times in the Oscars, but the ugly steps impose their own identity thanks to the talent of his young film director.
Separation: Ugly steps have been going on festivals for several months. How do you feel after traveling so many countries?
Emily Blichfeldt, Author and Director of Screenplay: This is definitely a dream that becomes a reality. I have been working on this movie for eight years and since the day I had an idea, I said to myself, “I think I have a very good idea, a prospect that we have never applied.” And now the film is sold all over the world, in every area.
In the beginning, my producer did not know what “the horror of the body” was. He told me that we couldn’t sell it like that. But then, the substance came out the previous year and really paved the way for this movie.
What is an excellent acceptance that is protected for the substance and elsewhere is that it shows how the public has a thirst for new stories. We are so tired of the other stories we look at on ads and social networks daily. They tell us that it is our duty to be beautiful and buy these products. They call it beauty products, but I don’t like this name, I prefer to talk about appearance products because beauty is what I have. They, no.
How is this movie personal?
When I was a teen, I felt very lonely and had problems with my body. In the movie it’s half -sister. I also realized that there is only one ideal, and that we try to adapt to a predetermined model. After all we are all half a sister. This movie is a universal character.
Is it difficult to make a film for the first production?
I think that making such an ambitious movie for your first movie when you are lucky that you have a wonderful producer like me, maybe a gift. This is obliged to take into account all aspects of sale. It is not as if you are making a modern realistic film with a much more modest budget where you may not have the time or resource that is necessary to ask yourself whether such a chair is suitable.
By building the world in this sense, I also realized that I love to create worlds and that all my projects are largely around. I was very lucky that I was surrounded by great people for costumes and teams.
All aesthetic interventions are based on either real procedures or rumors
However, costumes are very similar to Disney film films.
I kept the same silhouettes with half a sister and Cinderella on the ball. I really wanted to use these silhouettes to move the link that viewers have in the animated film. After this movie, no one will be able to watch Disney as before.
Young actress Leah Mienne is impressive.
This girl is a gift from the sky. I spent a lot of time on the audience of girls aged 18 to 25, and I thought I found someone who would have similar problems with Elvira, or who would have no minor guarantee. But none of these girls had the power that I needed for the character. You have to have the strength that you also loved the prince to really believe it, and then you are completely crazy.
One day Leah arrived. He starred in several TV series in Norway, but it was his first big role. I thought he was probably a bit harsh in one of the roles in which I had seen him where he was excellent, but I didn’t know what he could do. And then he immediately used the opportunity. He was not afraid to play with his very expressive face, to be funny, vulnerable.

In the film we see several tools of cosmetic surgery. They recall David Kronenberg’s fake seasonal. I would like to know if you have created tools specifically for a movie, or if you are inspired by real instruments used in the past?
I did both. All aesthetic interventions are based on either real procedures or rumors. Intervention on eyelashes is a procedure that we are talking about a lot, but I found it beautiful. It also reminds us of the obsession we still have for lashes and such things. Then, for instruments, for example, chisel, this is a tool used by the first aesthetic surgeons, as they were very influenced by the ideals of ancient Greece and sculptures, and they considered themselves sculptors who formed beauty.
Do you consider the ugly step as a political film?
Yes, of course, beauty is political. When you look at South Korea, for example, where cosmetic surgery has become very acceptable in society. People contract loans to find a job, because if you do not have some physics, you will not find a job. Thus, it is also a matter of social class, largely. And I think it’s very problematic.
