Rio de Janeiro – The leaders of the BRICS group growing in development nations meet on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro to strengthen requests to reform the traditional western institutions and present the blockage as a supporter of multilateralism in an increasingly fragmented world.
With forums such as the G7 and the G20 – the groups of the main economies of the world – damaged by the divisions and the “America First” approach by Donald Trump, The Brics has opened a new space for diplomatic coordination.
“Given the rebirth of protectionism, it is up to emerging nations to defend the multilateral commercial regime and reform the international financial architecture,” said President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in a BRICS commercial forum on Saturday.
Brics nations now represent more than half of the world population and 40% of their economic production, Lula observed.
Brics brought together the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India and China in his first summit in 2009. Subsequently, the blockade added South Africa and last year included Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. This is the first leader of the leaders who include Indonesia.
“The void left by the others is almost full of Bric,” said a Brazilian diplomat who asked not to be identified. Although the G7 still focuses on great power, the source added: “It does not have the predominance of the past”.
However, there are doubts about the objectives shared by an increasingly heterogeneous group that has grown and began to include regional rivals, as well as the main emerging economies.
Apart from the success of this year’s summit, the Chinese president Xi Jinping has chosen to send his prime minister in his place. Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate remotely due to a stopping mandate of the International Criminal Court (ICC).
However, many heads of state will meet for discussions at the Rio Museum of Modern Art on Sunday and Monday, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
More than 30 nations have expressed interest in participating in Bric, both as members or partners.
Growing influence
Brazil, which will also host the summit on the climate of the in November, took advantage of the two meetings to highlight the seriousness with which the development nations have to do with climate change, while Trump has slowed down the climatic initiatives.
Both China and the United Arab Emirates have reported, in the meetings with the Minister of Finance of Brazil, Fernando Haddad, in Rio de Janeiro, who intend to invest forever in the basic rain forests, according to two sources of knowledge of the financing of the conservation of forests in the street all over the world.
Brics’ expansion added diplomatic weight to the meeting, which aspires to speak by developing nations throughout the global South, strengthening requests to reform global institutions, such as the United Nations Security Council and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The growth of the blocks also increased the challenges to achieve a consent on controversial geopolitical issues.
Before the summit, the negotiators fought to find a common language for a joint declaration on the attack of Gaza, the conflict between Israel and Iran and a proposal for reform of the Security Council, two sources said the anonymity to speak openly.
To overcome the differences between the African nations in relation to the representative proposed by the continent to a renewed security advice, the group agreed to approve the seats for Brazil and India, leaving open which country should represent the interests of Africa, a person who is familiar with negotiations told Reuters.
Brics will also continue with its veiled criticisms of Trump’s tariff policy in the United States. During a ministerial meeting in April, the blockade expressed concern for “unilateral protectionist unilateral measures, including the indiscriminate increase in mutual rates”.
