F1: Red Bull Demite Christian Horner after 20 years in charge of the team

The internal crisis, the scandals and the drop in performance culminate in the departure of the longest leader of Formula 1.

In a decision that shaken Formula 1 Paddock, announced Red Bull on Wednesday (9), the resignation of Christian Horner from the team’s team position and the Red Bull Racing CEO. After two decades in command, the British leader leaves the team in the middle of one of the greatest internal crises of its history, marked by controversial behind the scenes and a significant drop in the surrender on the tracks.

Horner, who took the example of Red Bull in 2005, was immediately replaced by Laurent Mekies, a former Ferrari and current CEO of Racing Bulls (Red Bull Satellite Team). Alan will already remain the technical and sporting responsibility of the racing bulls, expanding its role within the group.

Crisis and Backstage Drunken

Horner’s departure occurs after months of internal turbulence, fueled by a series of episodes that check their leadership. In 2024, it was the subject of an investigation into inappropriate behavior with a team employee. Despite being innocent, the episode generated difficulties and internal cracks that intensified during the season.

Internally, wear has increased from the release of important names such as designer Adrian Newey and the voices of dissatisfaction of Max Verstappen and his father, Jos Verstappen. In addition, the team faces a sudden decrease in performance in 2025: it occupies only the fourth position in the manufacturers’ World Cup, with 288 points less than the leader McLaren, a scenario that accentuated the pressure on the scoreboard.

End of an era

Christian Horner ends his career as the longest team of contemporary Formula 1. Under his command, Red Bull won six World World Builders titles (2010-2013 and 2022-2023) and eight titles of the drivers-four with Sebastian Vettel and four with Max Verstappen. His direction transformed the Austrian team from a bold promise in 2005 into a dominant power in the last two decades.

The arrest was conducted by Oliver Mintzlaff, CEO of Red Bull GmbH, with the support of the summit of the parent company. Horner had a contract valid until 2030, but was unable to resist the scenario of instability and pressure by the shareholders.

Horner’s departure marks the end of one of the most victorious cycles in the recent history of Formula 1 – and the beginning of a new uncertain chapter for a team that, until recently, seemed unbeatable.

Verstappen’s stay, although still contractually guaranteed, begins to be questioned in the face of the unstable environment.
