Thor: Love and Thunder co-writer Jennifer Caitlin Robinson discusses the ending and a key scene found in additional stills.

[This story contains spoilers for Thor: Love and Thunder.]

To screenwriter Jennifer Caitlin Robinson, Landing Thor: love and thunder There was good news in the good/bad news conversation.

When he booked the job, he was already scrambling to write several projects for Marvel Studios, including Open the window s Hawk Eye. In February 2020, he learned that although he didn’t land on the latest launch Captain Marvel IIHe collaborated with filmmaker Taika Waititi. love and thunderA movie I wasn’t even there for.

After a month of writing at Marvel’s Burbank headquarters, Robinson, like the rest of the world, was sent home as the coronavirus pandemic spread. He eventually traveled to Australia, where he ran around with his laptop, editing scenes as part of Waititi’s fluid creative process.

The film includes a key scene in which Gore (Christian Bale) chooses to resurrect his daughter Love (India Rose Hemsworth) rather than seek revenge on the gods he blames for causing the world pain.

“There were many different versions of that last scene,” says Robinson. the hollywood reporterIn some iterations, Gore is trying to get revenge, but love returns because that’s what he wants in his heart.

The writer also reveals that the romantic comedy’s signature montage, which explores the deteriorating relationship between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), was an idea Waititi incorporated into additional photography.

Robinson, who also directed the upcoming Netflix movie Take revengealso spoke THR In the atmosphere of filming “summer camp” Guardians of the Galaxy The actress already reveals that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki was not on the table to return.

How did the villain Gore come to Christian Bale?

We work a lot in groups. [Producer] Brad Winderbaum, Taika and I: We’re really trying to find the right tone where he fits into Taika’s world and he’s funny, but he’s also a great villain. Her story is tragic and you really want to make sure you don’t criticize her or make her look ridiculous. You also want to give him Christian moments where he can play in the world that Taika has created. It shouldn’t be this villain, who was also very important to Christian.

I liked the prologue, which was weird. And then at the end of the prologue, you have this god who is like…

Idiot!

fool I was surprised that after the death of Gori’s daughter, I laughed a few minutes later.

This is Taika’s magic. He showcases everything Taika does well and is capable of creating and bringing to the screen to the best of his ability. He is alone in that sense.

You and Taika should introduce James Gunn’s Law. Guardians of the Galaxy the world. For example, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) misses Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and is not doing well. How much does he think about walking in this area?

I’m an MCU superfan, so there was something really crazy about writing dialogue for these characters that I loved. It was a balancing act between coming in as a true fan and someone who respects the MCU and all these characters. If Taika and I could say, “What parallels do these characters have? What did James Gunn create? What did Taika create? Where are the parallels? And how do we take that away and use it to explore the emotionality of this story? If you look at everything Thor lost and everything Quill lost, there’s a lot of overlap there. It feels natural to have Quill’s voice in Thor’s head, able to propel him through the arc of the movie.

Hemsworth and Pratt have a lot of charm together in these scenes. How were those days on set?

It was the first two weeks of shooting, so for Thor, we started meeting up chronologically at the beginning of the movie. It was a really fun way to start filming this movie, to have all these actors there. It was a two-week summer camp with the guards.

later a slow worldI was wondering what happened between Thor and Jane. How did you and Taika do it? I’m sure a lot of the romantic comedy editing got mixed up with the editing..

That was all Taika. This is what Taika thought of the additional photograph, and they took it after taking the main photograph. Of course, there was a lot of back and forth about what happened. What do we want to show? He wasn’t just talking to Taika, he was talking to Chris and Natalie. Really trying to develop: “How much do we want to show? How many ex-lovers are up against the mighty Thor? Are you really trying to find a balance between Jane’s story and what the focus should be? Something that came up wanted to know more about the past of this relationship.

I loved the jealousy between the weapons of Thor, Stormbreaker and Mjölnir. What do you remember doing this?

In Taika’s first draft, Stormbreaker had something of a personality. He ran and we found exciting ways everywhere to enjoy new love jealous looking at old love. It’s a love triangle. You have the love story of Thor and Jane, and then you have the love triangle of Mjölnir and Stormbreaker. Honestly, I ship. love.

There’s a good moment where Thor and Valkyrie sympathize a little with Jane, who is the new girl on the block as Thor. Was it important that everyone had a chance for these moments?

It’s all very much in the spirit of the Taika Waititi school of screenwriting, and I really want it to feel inclusive, and for all the characters to be able to lighten and break in unexpected ways. There are times when Val and Jane watch Thor, especially when he leaves town hall and comes back. “what it does?” And then let Jane have those moments. It’s about giving each character space to shine comically without that character becoming a joke. That’s what Taika does so well. You can create a space where everyone feels like they can laugh at each other, but it never hurts. It never means energetic.

How much did you work on Jane’s lines?

We had a script and every day I said, “Throw it away. write again. Let’s rewrite.” There was a lot of me running around on my laptop, typing stuff and listening. “Does it work?” Drive the computer and say, “I think I typed what you wanted?” It was a very, very expensive independent film. Taika throwing stuff, it’s about everybody working together and really standing up and everybody having a voice.

How to cast Russell Crowe as Zeus changes things for you?

He’s a legend. They chose him, and then it all falls into place, and you can really write about the strengths of this legend. Who do you think is the god that Thor worships? Thor is the most powerful Avenger. He’s the nicest guy. How do you create something bigger than Thor, and someone like Thor is like, “Oh my God.” And he clearly shrugs his shoulders like he’s, again, stupid. (Series.) And you want to find that balance between loving and hating Zeus.

Idris Elba is back for a while. Did you play Tom Hiddleston’s speech? Or was it not on the table?

Never at the table as I understand it. he is Loki– Earth. He’s doing his job. They are on two separate trips.

How long have you satisfied the ending with the return of Gore’s daughter Love?

love and thunder There was always love and thunder. Gore always wanted his daughter to exist. There were many different versions of this last scene. There were many different versions: “Does Gore always make decisions? Does the heart betray you somehow? He leaves at the last minute, “No, I want the gods to die”, but since eternity fulfills his deepest wish, is his daughter back? There were many different versions of how he came to be, but his emergence and this being that emerged from eternity was always the ultimate goal.

Were you on the set of the post-credits scene with Brett Goldstein as Hercules?

No, it was a secret situation that I didn’t know about and I was surprised by the debut. It’s fun to walk into this movie knowing all the twists and turns, but still be able to walk out of it like “Holy shit!”

You also write and refer to original ideas, not IP. Are you more focused on those moving forward or do you hope to return to Marvel in the future?

I was Thor And I wrote and directed my own movie called Take revenge, which will premiere this fall on Netflix. I’m very “where does the wind blow?” I’m excited to take the time to figure out what I want to do next. I love writing great movies. I like writing short films. I love making movies.

Did you bring Thor to your address?

100 percent. I already had a director. This was my second movie. I was able to learn a lot from Taika on set and I took a lot with me. You also gain flexibility and adaptability. Being able to take that skill set and apply it to something I had complete control over was really cool. In big movies, things always go wrong in small movies. This Movie I Was Making After Thor Stars Maya Hawke and Maya Hawke Weird stuff. So every day was an adventure filming, rewriting and editing this film. [Sometimes] was stuck Weird stuff And he couldn’t come to us. I took what I learned from watching Taika and working with Thor. Take revenge. It’s about teenagers getting revenge. is below strangers on the train, a crazy and corny situation in high school. I was able to catch Taika’s spirit of putting all the toys in the trunk and saying, “Let’s use it all and put it all together,” and I was able to implement that in my movie, which wasn’t there. What do you think you would use the Marvel narrative for. So everything is really intertwined in the most unexpected ways.
