Brazil will issue the national register of legal entities (CNPJ) in a new format that will combine numbers and letters, as announced at IRS as part of the process of modernization of the national tax system. The CNPJ structure will maintain traditional 14 characters, but unlike the current model – which uses only numbers – the new format will incorporate letters between the figures.
The first eight positions will identify the root of the number and may include letters and numbers, the following four will be alphanumeric and will represent the order of the institution, while the last two positions will continue to be numerical and correspond to the verification of the figures. This modification significantly increases the number of possible combinations, avoiding the exhaustion of the system, which today already records about 60 million establishments, with a numerical capacity limited to 99.9 million combinations.
With CNPJ Alfanumeric, the IRS estimates to reach almost a trillion of combinations, guaranteeing the feasibility of long -term registration.
The implementation of the new CNPJ will gradually begin from July 2026 and will be applied exclusively to new recordings, including companies, branches, rural producers, condominiums and liberal professionals. The existing CNPJs will remain valid, without the need for replacement or updating by the companies already established. Therefore, there will be no immediate impact on current registers, guaranteeing a planned transition and without inconvenience to the market.
Although the taxpayers already registered do not have to request any modification, the new companies should adapt their systems to recognize the new format and correctly calculate the verification figures, whose routine will undergo technical adjustments while maintaining the formula 11 module. This adequacy can imply costs for companies and developers, in particular in the invoices emission software.
In addition, the change is aligned with the current tax reform, which aims to unification and simplifying taxes with the implementation of taxes such as the contribution on goods and services (CBS) and the tax on goods and services (IBS). The new CNPJ format will facilitate the integration of systems and the automation of tax processes, contributing to a more efficient corporate environment.
The new Alfanumerico CNPJ will expand the ability to register and modernize the identification of legal entities in Brazil since July 2026, influencing only new recordings and guaranteeing the continuity of the existing registers without immediate changes from the current taxpayers.
It inspires the transformation into the world of work, business, society. It is the creation of the compass, content and the connection agency.
