The funeral of Preta Gil, scheduled for this Friday 25, not only represents the farewell of an artist, but also the celebration of his trajectory as a symbol of representativeness and resistance. Black woman who brings her color in the name and pride of her roots, Black says goodbye to an appointment full of meaning: the Latin American black women’s feast and international Caribbean. In Brazil, on July 25 it is also the national day of Tereza de Benguela and black women.

The funeral will begin at 9:00 and should end at 13 hours, at the Municipal Theater, in the center of Rio de Janeiro. The ceremony will be open to the public, at the request of the black itself. The artist had also requested a procession with the electric trio, but the city of Rio did not authorize the use of a sound car for safety reasons, according to Portal Leo Dias.

Black Women’s Day

The date dates back to 1992, when, in Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, the 1st meeting of Latin American and Caribbean black women. The purpose of the meeting was to denounce not only racism but also machismo all over the world. In the same year, the United Nations recognized the importance of the date.

The day was established in Brazil on June 2, 2014 through law no. 12,987 as National Day of Banguela and Black Women, honoring one of the most important black women in the history of the Black Movement of Brazil.
