Odeh Hathalin, a floorless collaborator, was shot in the chest in front of the community center of his village
The Palestinian activist and educator Odeh Hathalinalso known as Awdah Hathaleenwas killed last Monday, July 28, after being shot in the chest by an Israeli settler in the occupied region of the West Bank. Hathalin was a collaborator of the documentary Groundless (No other land), Oscar winner for best documentary in 2025.
The information was confirmed by Israeli filmmaker YUVAL ABRAHAMone of the film’s directors, in a publication on social networks. According to him, the author of the shooting would be the settler Yinon Levi, identified by local residents and already known for involvement in violent actions in the region. Levi is part of a group of settlers sanctioned by the European Union and the United Kingdom, but whose performance was favored by policies adopted by former US President Donald Trump at the beginning of his term this year.
A video released by Abraham shows Levi armed and shooting at random, although it is unclear whether the images are directly related to the moment of the murder of Hathalin.
Groundless It portrays the daily life of Bedouin communities threatened by demolitions, hostilities and illegal occupations in the West Bank, especially in villages near the 1949 Green Line. The lands of these communities were designated by Israel in the 1980s as military training zones, which aggravated the vulnerability situation of residents, especially in the face of the advancement of settlements such as Carmel and MA’on.
Hathalinwho was an English teacher and father of three, lived in the village of Umm Al-Kheir and acted as a logistical support and translator for journalists and documentary artists in the region. He also participated directly in the filming of Groundless.

This is how Israel erases us – a life at a time“wrote the co-director BASEL ADRAin a tribute published on platform X, accompanied by a photo next to Hathalin in Rome.

The death of the activist generated international repercussion. The French Foreign Ministry of French classified the case as a “murder” and condemned “with the greatest firmness” the climb of violence by Israeli settlers.
“This violence is an act of terrorism. The settlers have killed more than 30 people since early 2022. Israeli authorities should take responsibility, punish the perpetrators of these crimes – who remain unpunished – and protect Palestinian civilians“says the official note of the French government.
The Israeli police reported that they arrested an Israeli citizen to interrogation related to the case, but did not disclose further details about the progress of the investigation.
