What is the Pacific Fire Club and why do 90% of the world’s earthquakes occur in this area?

The fire -fighting ring or the Pacific fire circle includes a large number of countries. Most volcanoes in the world occur in it and the vast majority of earthquakes on the planet occur.

The Pacific Fire Club shakes the earth again.

Wednesday (30/7) a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake occurred, about 130 km from the eastern coast of the Russian peninsula of Kamchatka. The event generated notices of tsunami throughout the region.

There have been evacuation orders in some parts of Russia, Japan, the United States, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Chile.

Kamchatka is part of the Pacific Fire Club, also known as a ring of fire.

On the other side of the ocean there are several American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ecuador, the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Panama.

Then the ring doubles at the culmination of the Aleutas islands in the north of the Pacific Ocean, between Alaska and the Kamchatka peninsula.

From there, he lowers himself to include the coast and the islands of Russia, Japan, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Eastern Timor, Brunei, Singapore, Papua Nuova Guinea, Islands Solomon, Tonga, Samoa, Tuvalu and New Zealand.

In all, its length is 40 thousand km. There is also the largest amount of volcanoes in the world, including most of the planet’s superulgaring.

Wednesday’s tremor generated a tsunami with 3-4 meters waves on the Kamchatka coast, according to the regional emergencies minister, Sergei Lebedev.

The preliminary information from Russia State indicate that there were several injuries, but no seriousness.

The waves of tsunami generated by the earthquake, produced at 18 km deep, also arrived at the Hawaii archipelago and the west coast of the United States.

In Crescent City, in the northern region of California state, waves of 1.09 meters were recorded, according to the United States National Tsunami Alert Center.

The data of the American Geological Service indicate that this is the sixth most powerful earthquake ever recorded.

Sismologist Lucy Jones underlines that the earthquake should not cause disasters anywhere on the American continent. But it attracts the attention that occurs again in that area in the form of a horseshoe, with a high seismic activity.

90% of the earthquakes of the planet

“In the Pacific Fire Circle, there are 90% of all earthquakes in the world and 80% of the strongest tremors,” he explained in an interview before BBC News Mundo, Spanish service at the BBC, executive president of Peru Geophysical Institute, Hernando Taves.

The Pacific Ocean bed is based on various busty plates and “the fact that seismic activity is intense in the fire ring is due to the convergence of these plates and their friction, causing an accumulation of tension that must be released”, he explains.

The activity in the circle of fire is the result of the tettoon of the plate so called, which is the movement and collision of the layers of earth crust, which give rise to earthquakes and can also generate volcanic activities.

As a volcano with “high gas content”

In an interview before the BBC, the director of the National Disaster Prevention Center of Mexico, Hugo Delgado, explained that an earthquake acts on a volcano how it occurs when we mix a bottle of gas mineral water.

“The mechanical movement can cause the accumulation of gas on the surface of the bottle,” he says. “This increases the pressure and causes the water to go out into the jets.”

“Something similar happens in the volcano, which contains a high gas content.”

The expert indicates that only powerful tremors, with greater than 9 size, could have a very relevant impact on neighboring volcanoes.

He says that such an earthquake can even reactivate the volcanoes asleep for centuries, the intensification of active volcanoes or even the sudden reduction of their activity.

“The impact of the seismic waves of these high magnitude earthquakes is so strong that not only can they cause eruptions, but also make the volcano lose its business,” explains Delgado.
