Harry Potter star to play Cary Grant in biographical miniseries

Jason Isaacs, who played the terrifying Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter saga, will play Hollywood star Cary Grant in a four-episode biographical mini-series called Archie. The scripts will be written by Jeff Pope, who co-starred with Judi Dench in Philomena, and behind the camera will be Paul Andrew Williams (Broadchurch, A Confession).

The series will begin with the birth of Archibald Alexander Leach in Bristol in 1904 and will follow his childhood spent in extreme poverty, dealing with his father’s adultery and the loss of his older brother John. He would then follow his rise to become who we now know as Cary Grant.

There was only one Cary Grant, and I’m not crazy enough to try to step into that man’s shoes.Jason Isaacs said in a statement. “Archie Leach, on the other hand, couldn’t be further from the persona he invented to save himself.

“Jeff’s brilliantly written screenplays bring to life his relentless struggle to escape the demons that tormented him, his obsessive need to control everything, his fears, his weaknesses, his love and his losses. This is a human story, not a legend. I can’t wait to say it.

For his part, Jeff Pope, the screenwriter, went back to the beginnings of the project and especially what he wants to say with Archie. “As with many of my projects, I started at the end and worked backwards,“- he explained. “I found out that when he was at the height of his fame, Cary Grant retired to take care of his daughter.”

“Intrigued, I began researching why he became a single father. What happened? My journey took me to Bristol and a young lad named Archie Leach. Cary Grant became one of the most iconic figures of the twentieth century, loved. Both the president and the poor people were the key to everything as a child..”

In England, Archie will be available in previews on the ITVX platform before being broadcast on ITV. So far, no French acquisition has been announced.
