International projections indicate that the world should record a significant leap in the diagnosis of liver cancer in the coming decades. According to a study published in the magazine The handMonday (28), records should grow from 870 thousand by 2022 to 1.5 million by 2050.
Over 60% of these cases are associated with factors that can be avoided. The main ones include viral hepatitis – for which there is a vaccine – excessive consumption of alcohol and fat liver diseases, linked to overweight and physical inactivity.
How to contain the progress of liver disease?
The survey brings together data from experts from China, the United States, France and Japan. They estimate that simple changes such as vaccination and healthy habits could avoid up to 17 million new diagnoses and about 15 million deaths in the next two decades.
Liver cancer is today the third most lethal type in the world. TO ValĂ©rie ParadisTeacher of the Beaujon hospital (France) and leader of the group, it is necessary to expand the notice. “Compared to other types of cancer, the liver is very difficult to treat, but has risk factors that help to define specific prevention strategies. With joint and continuous efforts, we believe that many cases can be prevented and that both the survival of the patient and the quality of life will be significantly improved.”He said in a press release.
In addition to hepatitis and alcohol, the disease can originate in cirrhosis, genetic factors, contact with toxic substances and obesity. Most patients have no symptoms at the beginning. When there are signs, the most common are weight loss without reason, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, jaundice (skin and yellowish eyes), transparent stools, fatigue and swelling.
Another worrying factor is the most serious form of inflammatory liver disease, called mash. It should grow by 35% by 2050, associated with the accumulation of fats in the organ, in particular in people with obesity, diabetes or cardiovascular diseases.
TO Hashem B El SeragFrom the Baylor College of Medicine (USA), one of the authors of the study, “The increase in obesity rates is a growing risk factor for liver cancer cancer, mainly due to the increase in cases of excess fat around the liver.”. The presence of alcohol also worsens the trend. Cases relating to consumption should jump from 19% to 21% by 2050.
On the other hand, hepatitis B and C should have a reduction with the progress of vaccination and treatments, but should still be responsible for more than half of the events. China concentrates over 40% of diagnoses, reflecting the wide circulation of hepatitis B in the country. The situation highlights the urgency of early vaccination and screening.
