80 -year -old Man is the eighth victim of the Lazio region
The number of deaths caused by the western Nile fever in Italy has risen to 17 from the beginning of the year, said the health authorities on Sunday (10).
The most recent death is the eighth recorded in the Lazio region. He is an 80 -year -old elderly person, residing in the city of Aprilia, who was hospitalized at the Intensive Care Unit of the Hospital of Santa Maria Goretti in Latina.
According to medical sources, the victim, with comorbidity, had been hospitalized for about three weeks beyond the victim in Lazio, others have already lost their lives due to the disease in calendars (1), Campania (7), southern peninsula and Piedmont (1) in the North. All the victims were elderly with comorbilities.
The western Nile fever (name that refers to the African region in which it was discovered) has tropical origin and is transmitted by mosquitoes, whose circulation has increased in Italy and Europe as a whole. One of the reasons is the climatic crisis, which caused more and more intense summers on the continent.
The virus is not transmitted from person to person, but there is a small possibility of transfusion contagion of the blood.
In most cases, patients suffer only mild symptoms, but the disease can be dangerous for fragile individuals such as elderly, immunosumed or with chronic pathologies.
In the most serious situations, symptoms include high fever, intense headache, muscle weakness, disorientation, tremors, vision disorders, convulsions and coma. There is also the risk of permanent neurological effects.
The Italian government guarantees that the disease is “under control” and that the 2025 data are in line with previous years.
