Australia will recognize the Palestinian state in the United Nations in September

Australia will recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly next month, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Monday, a measure that increases international pressure on Israel after similar ads from France, the United Kingdom and Canada.

“Australia will recognize the state of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September to contribute to the international impulse towards a two -states solution, a ceased to fire in Gaza and the release of hostages,” said Albanse in a note.

Albanian told the journalists of Camberra that recognition would be based on the commitments that Australia received from the Palestinian authority, including the Islamic militant group Hamas will have no involvement in any future state.

“A two state solution is the best hope of humanity to break the cycle of violence of the Middle East and put an end to the conflict, suffering and hunger in Gaza,” Albanese said in a press conference.

Albanian said he spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Thursday and told him that a political and non -military solution was needed.

Last week, Australia criticized Israel’s plan to take military control of Gaza and Albanian said that the decision to recognize a Palestinian state was “even more forced” by the lack of respect for Netanyahu for the appeals of the international community and non -compliance with the legal and ethical obligations in Gaza.

“The government of Netanyahu is extinguishing the prospect of a two -states solution quickly expanding illegal settlements, threatening the attachment of the occupied Palestinian territories and explicitly opposes any Palestinian state,” said Albanese in the joint declaration with the foreign minister Penny Wong.

The commitments made by the Palestinian authority to reform governance, demilitarize and create general elections, as well as the needs of the Arab League so that Hamas end his domain in Gaza, create an opportunity, he said.

“This is an opportunity to isolate Hamas,” he added.

Wong said he informed the American secretary of state Marco Rubio about the Australia decision.
