Volodymyr Zelensky has strengthened the importance of support by the United States and Europe and said that Sunday conversations aimed to align the discussions with Donald Trump, scheduled for Monday in Washington. The Ukrainian president spoke of the need for a ceased the fire and the proposal of the United States to offer security guarantees similar to article 5 of NATO, which establishes the commitment of collective defense, but without formal adherence to the Atlantic alliance.

Ursula von der Leyen has declared that international borders cannot be changed by force and that decisions in the Ukrainian territory should be taken exclusively by Ukraine. He stressed that these decisions cannot occur without the active participation of the country in negotiations. The speech of the President of the European Commission was a response to the declaration of Donald Trump, who suggested that Ukraine should agree and give part of its territory and therefore put an end to the war.

Zelensky and Ursula von der Leyen also spoke to the European leaders who participated in a videoconference on Sunday afternoon. After the meeting, which lasted about two hours, the French president Emmanuel Macron said:

“If today we are weak with Russia, we will prepare tomorrow’s conflicts. We want peace (…) but we want a robust peace, a peace that cannot be absolutely a peace that cannot be occurred at the expense of European security.”

European support in Zelensky

Several European leaders who have been excluded, as well as Ukrainian, on Friday between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, will go to Washington to support Volodymyr Zelensky and prevent Ukraine from being under pressure from accepting an unfavorable agreement.

“We are experiencing a crucial moment of conflict for the safety of Ukraine and of all of Europe,” said Emmanuel Macron, highlighting the “extremely serious context” in which Monday will take place.
