With strong political appeal, the film arrives at the international circuit as one of the main Brazilian bets in the race for awards in the season
The secret agentfrom Kleber Mendonça Filho (Bacurau), received on Sunday night, 17, two awards at the 29th Festival of Cine de Lima – PUCP: Best Official Jury Movie and Best Film for the International Critic Jury.
In the announcement at the ceremony, the official jury released the justification of the prize given by the BBVA Foundation: “For the visual, sound, authorial and production design that brilliantly incorporates elements of unexpected genres illuminating traumatic times in the political and social history of Brazil, the jury unanimously grants the best film award.“
Kleber thanked the award and sent a video to the festival: ‘The Secret Agent’ is a younger “brother” of another movie I made two years ago – ‘Ghost Portraits’ and that I had the same honor to be awarded. I am very honored.“
This is the third prize Kleber receives at the Cine de Lima festival, the feature Bacuraucoded by Juliano Dornelleswon the best film award in 2019 and Ghost portraits won the award for best documentary in 2023.
The jury of the international press also read a text justifying the award: “For its masterful dominance of the scene that recovers a time of resistance and clandestinity, with the cinephile use of different genres, always with an agile narration that brings together its artistic and political concerns.“
In a second video, Kleber commented the choice, which is the second press award received by the movie: “The critic award for me is very very special. For 13 years of my life, I was a critic and were very important years for my work and my relationship with cinema and my country, Brazil, and with other countries and I could better understand other cultures and the history of cinema that is so important for me. It’s a great honor, I’m very moved. Thank you very much!“
What is the story of The secret agent?
The plot of The secret agent is set in the 1970s and revolves around Marcelo (Wagner Moura, Civil war), a university professor who runs away from Sao Paulo to Recife to escape government agents who seek him for subversive activities. However, he soon discovers that he is being spied on his neighbors.

Highlight in Cannes
During his time at the Cannes Festival, The secret agent took four awards, two from the official ceremony and two parallels, with emphasis on Wagner Mourawho became the first Brazilian to win the honor of best actor at the festival, Le Prix d’Antpretation Mascine.
He joined FERNANDA TORRES (Best actress per I know I’ll love you in 1986) and SANDRA CORVELONI (Best actress per Pass line in 2008) in the group of acting awarded with the highest honor honor at the festival.
Furthermore, Kleber Mendonça Filho was the first Brazilian to win the award for best direction (Le Prix de la mise en scène) since Glauber Rochawho won the honor with The Dragon of Evil against the Holy Warriorin 1969.
Before the official ceremony, The secret agent It had already won two important parallel awards, the Criticism Award, offered by the International Federation of Critics (Fipresci), and the Prix des Cinémas Art etei, awarded by the French Association of Independent Exhibitors.
