The agreement between Brazil and Paraguay involving the Binacional Itiipu hydroelectric rate is already given “and the process will be resolved by the end of 2026, when the terms of the preacher already announced, the general manager of the Brazilian part, Enio Verri said to Reuters will expire.
According to Verri, the report of the agreement, which deals with the commercial, economic and financial bases, is ready, but needs diplomatic writing adjustments and obeying the rites to the final signature by the two countries.
“What I can say is that we ended up in order next year, that is, the” deadline “to solve it is until December next year, and this will happen,” said Verri in Reuters on Thursday after participating in an event in Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to being signed by the presidents of Brazil and Paraguay, the agreement must however be approved by their conferences in both countries.
A sort of “pre-agreement” was announced last year, causing a reduction in the plant’s energy rate for Brazilian consumers since 2026, something between $ 10 and $ 12. Currently, the rate is in the $ 17, but requires the transfer of resources from Itiipu accounts to stay at this level.
Brazil and Paraguay had previously committed themselves to signing, until May of this year, the agreement of this “Annex C”, establishing the new financial conditions for the marketing of the hydroelectric energy of the Italian Treaty of the Treaty.
The negotiations, however, were suspended due to investigations on the intelligence action of the Brazilian Abin agency against the Paraguayan during the government of Jair Bolsonaro. The conversations resumed in July, after a visit by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in the nearby country.
With the current Itiup agreement, each country has the right to the middle of the energy generated by the binational, but Brazil acquires a significant slice of the Paraguayan share.
Solar energy
The Itiipu executive has also stated that, from September, the system will begin to generate photovoltaic energy from ferries with solar plates spread through the hydroelectric dam.
With an investment of 1 million dollars, the initial generation of the company will be 1 megawatt-peos (MWP), but the goal is to reach 5 MWP in the future, said Verri, stating that the system will feed the energy consumption of the plant itself.
