Before Daniel Radcliffe, there was another Harry Potter… and you’ve never heard of it!

More than 10 years ago, before JK Rowling published the first volume of her magical saga, another young hero named Harry Potter already existed in cinema! Discover the incredible story of the movie Troll…

No! JK Rowling is not the first to create a young hero who develops in the magical world and responds to the name of Harry Potter!

Indeed, even if it seems implausible and completely improbable, in 1986, some 11 years before it was published. Harry Potter at the Sorcerer’s Stone In England, a fantasy B-series feature film signed by John Carl Buechler hit the darkrooms.

Movie title: Troll. His main character’s name: Harry Potter Jr.

Even if he wasn’t a wizard, this young boy living in San Francisco was faced with a world of magic and evil forces that suddenly invaded his everyday life. As for his interpreter, fans of The NeverEnding Story will know him well, as he was played by Noah Hathaway, a young actor in Wolfgang Petersen’s film.

Is this pure coincidence? An extraordinary coincidence? Or – as some later claimed – was J.K. Rowling was directly inspired by the 1986 film and went so far as to plagiarize the protagonist’s name to bring her little witch to life?

This last hypothesis, rejected by J.K. Rowling, unlikely. First, because these accusations of plagiarism against huge blockbusters are commonplace in Hollywood. Then again, if Rowling was truly inspired to create her own magical world by Troll, it’s hard to see why she would go so far as to copy the main character’s name.

However, 15 years before Daniel Radcliffe, Noah Hathaway was the first actor to play “Harry Potter” on film. Now 50, he has become a black belt in several martial arts and a professional tattoo artist who still attends The Neverending Story fan conventions.
