The King of Dreams still has many challenges to face: this is all we know about the future of the series, based on the Neil Gaiman comics.
‘Sandman’ has been one of the great premieres among Netflix series in 2022, and fans already have their sights set on the second season. It has not yet been confirmed, but it seems that the remarkable viewing numbers (still without becoming one of the most watched Netflix series) and the good reactions from the press and the public could speed up its renewal, so that the story created by Neil Gaiman could continue to expand on the small screen. Here we collect everything we know at the moment about what is already one of the best fantasy series of recent years.
The series, based on Gaiman’s acclaimed comics, follows in the footsteps of the King of Dreams, Morpheus (played by Tom Sturridge), who has spent More than a century of confinement in the human world and now, released, he must fix the messes that have been generated in his absence: nightmares that he created are loose unleashing chaos, thousands of people fell into deep dreams from which they could not wake up, his kingdom is in ruins… Dream will have to put things in order, not knowing that perhaps all his misfortunes they are due to a plot to destroy him.
Perhaps many wonder: Is ‘Sandman’ only for comic fans? And the answer is no: ‘Sandman’ is a gripping fantasy adventure perfect for any viewer, whether or not they’re familiar with the source material. Of course, perhaps the latter do not realize that ‘Sandman’ forgets an essential character, The Prodigal, but it is almost an advantage, since they may be surprised in the next episodes. On the other hand, there are those who knew one of the comic book characters, Lucifer, through the successful series starring Tom Ellis. The actor did not reprise his role in this new series and the fans were upset, but the truth is that the controversy of Lucifer from ‘Sandman’ has been more than settled after seeing the great work of Gwendoline Christie in the role.
After exploring the details of the explained ending of the first season of ‘Sandman’, we compile all the information we have so far about the second season: Is it confirmed by Netflix? When will the release date be? Who will return to the cast? How will the story continue? We will update this topic as soon as we have more news. For now, this dream is over!
‘Sandman’: is season 2 confirmed?
Nope, Netflix has yet to confirm the second season of ‘Sandman’, so the project could be renewed or cancelled. We hope it to be first!
In an interview with NMEthe showrunner Allan Heinberg spoke of the future of the series, and acknowledged that material is not lacking at all. “We have so many [temporadas] as they allow us to have. If enough viewers show up, we can last quite a while. We want to do it all, we want a miniseries spin off. We would love to do it for as long as they let us.”.
There is no doubt that the hopes of both Heinberg and Neil Gaiman himself are quite high, and both have been quite positive in their interactions with the press about the future of the series. Still, we can never put our hands in the fire for a renewal at Netflix.
‘Sandman’, season 2: cast
Although not yet confirmed, we hope to see the main cast of ‘Sandman’ again in a second season. That includes, of course:
However, in the second season there will also be goodbyes. It is unlikely that we will meet again with The Corinthian (played by Boyd Holbrook), as he was defeated by Morpheus in the season finale. Now, Dream may recreate him later, since he asks Lucienne to save her skull for later. Speaking of his character’s return, Holbrook told Digital Spy: “Can he really go away? He was later reincarnated. [en los cómics] like a different entity, like a nice guy. So I think it’s a really fun thing to play around with, get to know him already as this dark entity and see what more benevolent Corinthian entity he can come up with.” It seems like we can’t quite rule it out either.
Other characters whose stories have come to a natural ending in the first season they are Gilbert (played by Stephen Fry), also known as Fiddler’s Green and who we saw transform into a meadow in the final episode, and also Hob Gadling (played by Ferdinand Kingsley, son of Ben Kinglsey), who will continue to enjoy his immortality and hopefully than staying every hundred years in the same bar.
Who we do hope to see again, from what we know of the Neil Gaiman comics, is Nada (played by Deborah Oyelade). In the first season we only see her briefly during Morpheus’s visit to hell, but we can anticipate that there is a great story hidden there.
Secondly, we haven’t seen all the sisters of Morpheus yet. Yes, we have met Death, Desire and Despair, as well as the protagonist Dream, albeit very briefly, but… what about Delirium, Destiny and the mysterious Prodigal aka Destruction?
Neil Gaiman has confirmed that we will see them in the next season. In an interview with Digital Spy, he stated: “If we do a second season, you’ll see more of the family. Hopefully, by the end of the second season, you’ll have met everyone”. The actors who will play the Prodigal, who has been mentioned a few times during the first season (his brothers claim that he is missing), and Delirio and Destino are still unknown.
‘Sandman’, season 2: synopsis
Warning: spoilers for the first season of ‘Sandman’ below
Neil Gaiman has already revealed that he has a narrative arc prepared for the second season of ‘Sandman’. And, after seeing the first season, there is no doubt that there is a lot of unfinished business.
On one side is the enmity between Lucifer and Morpheus, which is intensified in the adaptation thanks to their confrontation in hell. The King of Dreams wins, and later we will see the fallen angel preparing revenge on him in the last episode. Without a doubt, this rivalry will be one of the key points of the next season, and Lucifer’s plans to destroy the world, something that also has to do with his own personal revenge against God, his father.
On the other hand, also against the King of Dreams, he is the alliance between Desire and Despair to end his brother.
We will also learn more about the relationship between Nada and Morpheus. In the comics, Morpheus saw her suicide as a betrayal and sentenced her to Hell as penance. We do not know if the adaptation will follow the same steps as the original material.
We also do not forget the Lyta’s newborn son, conceived within a dream along with the ghost of her husband. As Morpheus advanced in one of the scenes, that child conceived within the Kingdom of Dreams is his property, and he will return to claim it at some point. We have no doubt that Rose Walker will do everything in her power to stop her, but if we go her way in the comics, the young woman will have her own issues to deal with.
