The earthquake in Afghanistan leaves more than 600 deaths; What is known

Taliban’s authorities still try to understand the size of the devastation of the magnitude tremor 6.0.

The authorities in Afghanistan say that at least 600 people died after an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 reached the country on Sunday in the country (31/8).

The government of the country, led by the Talibã, says that there are 610 deaths and more than 1,300 injured.

The earthquake took place at a depth of 8 km and shook buildings from the capital Cabul in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.

Most of the affected areas are remote, which makes it difficult to collect more accurate data.

Dozens of houses are under rubble, they say sources of the Talibã government. According to the government, entire villages were destroyed.

The residents of the affected regions referred to the BBC that the isolated terrestrial landslides near the epicenter of the earthquake, which means that it will take a long time to completely evaluate the damage.

The earthquake reached the mountainous region of Eastern Afghanistan at 11:47 pm on Sunday (16:17 GMT). The tremor occurred in a superficial depth, which makes it even more destructive.

His epicenter was 27 km from Jalalabad, the fifth largest city in the country, in the province of Nangarhar, in Eastern Afghanistan.

The earthquake also hit the provinces of Kunar and Laghman and was warned 140 km away in Cabul.

The rescue efforts are difficult because the roads in the mountain regions are very narrow. Some of them were blocked by landslides.

The Talibã government claims to have sent helicopters to transport the wounded to Nangarhar airport. From the airport, the injured are then transferred from the ambulance to the regional hospitals for the treatment.

The government states that all civil and military authorities are involved in the response to catastrophes.

The authorities ask for help from international organizations.

A doctor who works in Asadabad, the capital of the province of Kunar, told the BBC that his hospital is crowded and that there is a new patient who arrives every five minutes.

Why are there so many devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is very inclined to earthquakes because it is located on a series of geological failures in which Indian and Eurasian busty plaques are encountered.

In October 2023, an earthquake of magnitude 6.3 hit the province of Western Herat, killing about 1,500 people, according to the United Nations. The tremor was very destructive because it was superficial, which occurred only 14 km under the earth’s surface.

The earthquake in 2023 killed more than a thousand people

The depth of the earthquake of this Sunday was even smaller than deep: 8 km.

In 2022, the province of Paktika was hit by an earthquake that killed even more than a thousand people.

Residents in Afghanistan are also particularly vulnerable to earthquakes because many buildings and houses are built with wood, mud bricks or fragile concrete and tend not to be resistant to tremors.

Much of the damage caused by earthquakes in the mountains of Afghanistan also comes from the landslides that cause, which can destroy houses and block rivers. The nonsense of the ground also have an impact on the roads, making access to rescue teams and equipment to remote places difficult.

The region hit by the Sunday earthquake already suffered from floods during the weekend.

The floods hit the provinces of Nangarhar and Kunar between Friday and Saturday, killing at least five people, according to the local press. At least 400 families were affected, said the international organization for Sunday migration.

The flood, which caused landslides and damaged the infrastructure, also temporarily interrupted the traffic between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
