Yago Dora made history in the Figi and put Brazil on top of the surfing the world.
The surfist Yago Dora became the Brazilian fifth to win a world title by beating the WSL finals, held in the Figi. With this historic victory, Gabriel Medina, Adriano De Souza, Italo Ferreira and Filipe Toledo is combined as part of a generation that has transformed Brazil into world surfing power. Brasilian Storm dominates WSL today and has lost only the world titles with a single opponent.
Hawaiian John John Florence is the only surfer from the outside of Brazil to win the male category WSL. He was world champion in three seasons (2016, 2017 and 2024) and consolidated himself as “lone enemy” of the Brazilian storm. The new generation composed of names such as Jack Robinson, Griffin Colapinto and Ethan Ewing is promising, but has not yet been able to threaten Brazilians in a very considerable way.
It is noteworthy that Griffin and Ethan have eliminated Brazilian opponents in their finals of the WSL campaigns. However, when they had their possibilities in front of the leaders of the decisive battery, they were dominated respectively by Yago and Filipe. So, when John Florence was absent from the championship tour in 2025, the world title returned to the hands of a Brazilian.
Between 2014 and 2025, eleven seasons were played at WSL. At this moment cut out, Brasilian Storm has raised the cup on eight occasions. Yago Dora was the last to participate in the World Champions Party, but the parasus based in Santa Catarina has a lot to celebrate after its first result.
Sometimes contested or even criticized for his (lack of) competitiveness, which seems in some unreasonable way, Yago Dora is extremely skilled in the Council and managed to transform his qualities into results in 2025. The surfer had won his first phase in the elite in 2023, when he was champion in Squarema and began to be considered a true candidate in the surf League. The win of the WSL finally two years later consolidated him in the debate and ended any interrogation on his skills to be successful in competitive surf.
During the press conference, Yago Dora revealed after the WSL finals, who needed more time to start dedicating himself to batteries compared to his compatriots, since many of them competed in the national phases of very young. “It took me a little more to earn trust and feel good. These other guys formed themselves within the competition … For me, it was a longer process,” said Yago. “I was more concentrated on the production of freesurfing and video in adolescence,” explained Paraná. The wait was rewarded last Monday during the WSL finals, a stage that crowned the dedication of Dora inside and out of the water.
If the 2025 season had a peculiar detail that was the double absence of Gabriel Medina and John John Florence, the rivals are confirmed in 2026 and promise to work on WSL opponents. Now, however, Yago Dora has become an even safer component that wants to keep the good time for next year. The athlete did not officially announce, but he understood that he will compete again in 2026 to defend the conquest of the world title.
The new calendar will be played in running points and with a punctuation bonus in the Pipeline phase. With this, it is right to say that favoritism follows with the members of the Brazilian storm, including Yago Dora, and accompanied by John John Florence. Other international surfers are still one (or more) passages below in the list of WSL favoritism. Yago returned the world title to Brazil in 2025, but the representatives of the Brazilian storm will have to fight hard to keep the trophy in the country in 2026.
