Remember the walkers that could pick up rocks, break through doors, and try to climb stairs that we saw in Season 1 of the show — features that didn’t go unnoticed but have never been discussed since.
As reported by Insider, during the series’ panel at San Diego Comic-Con, showrunner Angela Kang and the cast were asked about the new race of immortals mentioned at the end of the new tape – the Season 11 announcement.
As a reminder, in this trailer, Aaron (Ross Marquand) claims to have heard stories about walkers being able to climb walls and open doors, and that he always wondered if they were true or not. On the screen we see one of them climbing a fence…
Angela Kang then said that the addition of these new zombies was no accident and that they would have a connection to the beginning of the series.
“I think with pedestrians in some ways it’s a throwback in some We saw some of them in the first season of Walking Dead, but not everyone has met these walkers. This is almost a variation that is only regional.“
This addition won’t come as a shock after all, as another mention of a faster variant zombie race has already been made in the December 2021 spin-off series The Walking Dead: World Beyond.
During the 5-minute post-credits scene that airs at the end of the series, Centers for Disease Control virologist Dr. Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich), who we saw in TWD Season 1, mentions a “cluster of variants” that he has yet to see in the United States.
Viewers could then see a shot and killed woman come back to life faster than they were used to on the show. It usually takes a few hours or more for a person to turn into a zombie. Here, the zombies appeared faster and more aggressively than fans are used to.
The most disturbing thing was that he revived, despite being shot in the head. Usually in the TWD universe, when someone gets shot in the head, they die and don’t turn into a zombie. If the bullet didn’t just go through his brain, this scene suggested that there was a type of immortal that was harder to kill or just never died.
At the time, showrunner Scott Gimple told Insider that the walker wasn’t super powerful, but it was different. “I hope that people’s imaginations will be “fired up” about what this could mean and what we are seeing“, he added.
Also during the panel, Angela Kang also explained that the walkers mentioned in the new trailer will keep Daryl and the rest of the survivors on their toes.
“Every time the rules change, it means our kids have to pay more attention to what they’re doing because they realize the methods they’re using to survive aren’t working. Our survivors, who are very, very smart, will try to adapt to this. But this will be just one of the many conflicts they will face.“
Since taking over the queens of TWD in Season 9, Angela Kang has found clever ways to streamline certain moments from past seasons to fit the present, such as the political connection between Commonwealth leader Pamela Milton (Lyla Robbins). and the former ruler of Alexandria, Deanna Monroe (Tovah Feldshuh)—a connection the comics never made.
While the addition of these intelligent zombies comes a little late in the series, it seems to be an homage to the first season as a way to resolve a plot that has been left hanging since the show’s debut. From Frankie, formerly of Shawran. Darabont.
But it also allows you to breathe new life into the TWD universe, setting up new things for the many spin-offs, such as the one that will focus on Daryl, Negan and Maggie called The Walking Dead. : The island of the dead, or the one where Rick and Michonne will be.
And finally, still during the conference, Angela Kang talked about the end of the series. Asked by Insider if it would have a definite ending or if it would be more open-ended, he replied: “The thing is, even if there were no spin-offs, it felt like the series had an ending.”
He adds: “LThe show itself needs its own ending, but the door is open, as it often is in life and as it was at the end of the comic. There is always a story that continues after the story told on the screen is over.“
