After the audience record of “Brutal Pact: The Assassination of Daniella Perez”, HBO Max’s next documentary series will be about Brazilian funk.
Award-winning filmmaker and documentary maker Luiz Bolognesi (“The Last Forest”) has been working on “Funk.Doc: Popular & Proibido” for at least four years, when the project was first announced.
Due to this elastic period, the production also has one of the last interviews granted by Mr. Catra before his death in 2018.
The series also brings testimonies from many other exponents of the musical genre, such as Ludmilla, Kondzilla, Valesca Popozuda and Bonde do Tigrão, who try to draw a complete portrait of national funk.
There are five episodes in total, which trace the origins of the genre, its approach to violence, the aesthetics of a strong sexual charge and the growing influence of Brazilian funk in international music.
A co-production with Gullane and Buriti Filmes, “Funk.Doc: Popular & Proibido” will premiere in two weeks, August 30, on both the HBO pay channel and the HBO Max platform.
