Irish group promoted revolutionary tour with several performances accompanied by Guns N ‘Roses singer in the early 1990s

Throughout its reference construction process, the Guns n ‘Roses It was not only influenced by hard rock in vogue in the 1980s, but also by other artists and bands that escape such aesthetics or other eras. It is of general knowledge, for example, that the vocalist Axl Rose was very inspired by names like Elton John and Queennotorious for the most melodious sound, besides Sex pistolsicon of the seventy punk rock.

However, it still surprises that the U2 has served as the basis for Rose’s work. The American singer liked the Irish group so much – founded in 1976, but burst around the world in the 1980s – which even accompanied a virtually entire tour of them.

In an interview of 1993 to Hit (via Far Out), Axl was asked about his musical taste at that time. After highlighting the newly encenrate Jane’s Addictionthe artist mentioned his predilection by U2, especially by the phase of that moment, which encompassed the album Achtung Baby (1991) and the revolutionary tour Zoo TV.

“Jane’s Addiction was my favorite band, but they broke up. I usually can’t see shows, because the atmosphere is very agitated, but I really like U2 and enjoy their shows in stadiums a lot. I went to all their shows I could. Mr. Bungleand even having a relationship of love and hatred with the Faith no MoreI really like this album. I have also heard many bizarre things: Roger Waters, Jimmy Scott, Lyle Lovett, NINE INH NAILS, Alice in Chains – My taste covers a very wide range. ”

Backstage reports point out that Axl was impressed by the technological aspect employed by U2 in Zoo TV. At the time, the group formed by Bono (voice), The Edge (guitar), Adam Clayton (low) and Larry Mullen Jr. (battery) adopted a well -designed stage production with huge screens that showed from sampled music videos to live TV records, robust lighting system and a theatrical concept that involved display of live television channels, belly dance and a series of characters adopted by Bono.

Everything was thought of as a way of criticizing the “sensory overload” that mass media caused in society in those days. One of the inspirations was the journalistic coverage of the Gulf War by the American channels – no wonder, one of the big screen insertions showed live records of the city of Sarajevo devastated by the armed conflict.

For Rose, it was a little easier to follow a part of the tour because the U2 schedule coincided with Guns N ‘Roses at many times. In the middle of 1992, for example, both bands toured Europe and passed through the same countries. Axl was able to participate in an Irish group concert in Vienna, Austria, singing “Knockin ‘on Heaven’s Door”original composition of Bob Dylan rewritten by Guns N ‘Roses.

Exchange of kindness between axl rose and u2

In one interview of the timeBono joked about – and then explained – the proximity to Axl and Guns, with the right to allow American colleagues to share from their private plane. He said:

“You know how it is: you have to give these young bands a chance. It’s like: Do you want to get a ride on my bike? Seriously, Axl Rose really has something. There’s something in him that sounds true to me. […] He has a very interesting ability to scream. I think he has been going through a lot, and he has a lot of courage, just like his band. I am not familiar with the language of hard rock enough to know and understand everything they do, but a song like ‘November Rain’ connect with me. ”

Biography U2 at the end of the worldAxl Rose explained the situation he was going through in the period: his tumultuous separation of ERIN EVERLY. During this period, the singer identified himself with the work of U2, to the point of declaring:

“I think ‘One’ is one of the best songs ever created. I put to play and I start crying. Very impactful. Very good for me. I was really upset because of my ex-wife and we never had a chance, because of the damage to our lives [antes de nos conhecermos]. I didn’t accept it completely. This song helped me see this. I just wanted to write a letter to Bono saying, ‘Your album did a lot for me’. ”
