Actor Johnny Depp (“Alliance of Crime”) will direct the film “Modigliani”, about two days in the life of the Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Clemente Modigliani. The information comes from The Hollywood Reporter’s website.
Modigliani was a famous figurative artist, who became known for painting portraits of female faces with elongated necks. Depp is a fan of the artist and has purchased many of his paintings, which contributed to his financial ruin.
The film will take place in 1916, when Modigliani was living in Paris. Considered a failure by the public and critics, the artist goes through a turbulent period that becomes the turning point of his life and his career.
“Modigliani” is based on a play by Dennis McIntyre. The screenplay for the adaptation was written by duo Jerzy Kromolowski and Mary Olson-Kromolowski (“The Promise”).
In addition to directing, Depp will also produce the film, along with actor Al Pacino (“The Irishman”). The project will mark the reunion of Depp and Pacino after the two worked together on “Donnie Brasco” (1997).
This will be the second time that Depp has directed a fictional film. The first was 25 years ago when he directed the drama “The Bravo” (1997), in which he also starred alongside Marlon Brando (“The Godfather”).
This time around, however, the actor has to be content with working behind the camera. The cast will soon be cast, and filming is expected to begin in 2023. No date has been set for the premiere.
Although still involved in the legal process with his ex-wife, actress Amber Heart (“Aquaman”), Depp is slowly getting his career back on track.
He is currently filming the French production “Jeanne du Barry”, in which he plays King Louis XV. Additionally, he appeared in the play “Sea of Dawn” and invests him in his musical career.
