Kenya Barris, creator of the “Black-ish” and “Grown-ish” series, will write and direct a new version of the classic “The Wizard of Oz”. The information comes from the Deadline website.
The new version will update the classic storyline.
But it is worth mentioning that the plot has already received numerous “updates”, from the musical version with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson “The Unforgettable Wizard” (1978) to the theatrical production “The Wicked”, centered on the story of Wicked Witch of the West. – and which will become a film with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in 2024.
The opening story of “The Wizard of Oz” follows Dorothy and her dog Toto, who are brought to the magical land of Oz after a hurricane sweeps through their grandparents’ farm in Kansas. There, they make friends with a Scarecrow, a Tin Man and a Lion, and set out for the Emerald City to find the Wizard of Oz.
It was first told in a 1900 children’s book, written by L. Frank Baum and drawn by WW Denslow, and began a literary franchise that produced 14 books.
The books have been adapted many times for cinema, with several adaptations taking place in the period of silent cinema. However, the most famous version is still the one released in 1939, which has become one of the greatest classics in the history of cinema.
Kenya Barris is currently involved in the post-production of his first film, the comedy “You People” with Jonah Hill (“Maniac”). He also wrote the remake of the classic “White Men Can’t Bury” (1992) and is developing a new “Black-ish” spin-off series entitled “Old-ish” which will follow the grandparents of the central characters. None of these projects have a release date.
