According to posts that criticized GWAR, the band promotes “Normalization of violence”. Movement -related profiles Make America Great Again (Maga), who was Trump’s campaign slogan, said (via NME):
“This is not bold, grotesque and reckless, and normalizes violence against a real person. This is not right. Riot Fest and Gwar have crossed a big limit.”
Another added:
“The left is really sick.”
Node Tiktokthe profile Libslinked to Republican partycondemned the band’s staging:
“Riot Fest artists in Chicago, Illinois, simulated President Trump’s bloody riot on stage while the crowd applauded. This is incitement. They know exactly what they are doing. Democrats can’t contain themselves. They love to promote violence.”
What the Gwar says
Founded in 1984 in Richmond, Virginia (USA), GWAR has been noted for performing live with fantasies of monsters and addressing topics such as violence, drugs, sex and politics in a satirical way.
According to the vocalist Blöthar The BerserkerAccusing them of inciting violence is a wrong interpretation of the band’s proposal. He said Billboard:
“The idea that Gwar is normalizing violence is patently absurd. We are not fearful millionaires of what people will say when they see what we do… We are a group of artists who do art, and the idea is that what we did is normalize violence… There is nothing normal in the violence that happens in a GWAR show.”
The gwar frontman added:
“It’s a cartoon, it’s LOONEY TUNES… It is an attempt to transform violence into a show and show the absurd absurdity of humanity. This is what GWAR is, it is absurd. To say that it is normalizing violence is really exaggerated. ”
Festival pronounces
The Riot Fest festival also spoke out and went out in defense of the band, celebrating that “Internet idiots” are just offering free advertising to the event:
“The dariest people on the internet are still angry these days. I love it. As long as they keep posting that amazing video and mentioning our name for free advertising, it’s a victory for me.”
