List reveals the influence of rap through the decades, with iconic albums such as The Infamous, Yeezus, All Eyez on Me and Illmatic and many others
The magazine Pitchfork released its ranking of 100 best rap albums of all timedefining them as some of the “most essential and influential albums” of the genre. The list was prepared by Pitchfork’s own editorial team, without public voting, but based on music criteria and cultural context. According to the organizers, the quality of rap as a craft and the representation of different styles were emphasized, avoiding repeating many albums by the same artist.
In the compilation, we sought to give space to less canonized scenes and ensure variety: for example, cases of multiple albums by the same person were minimized. Despite recognizing inevitable gaps (such as the smaller female presence, highlighted in the text), the list seeks to trace the trajectory of rap over 50 years, reflecting the “sincere sequence of love, admiration and enthusiasm” for the genre.
