Barroso, of the STF, announces his retirement at 67

The Supreme Minister had been talking about leaving office since the beginning of the week

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court, Luís Roberto Barroso, announced his retirement from office on Thursday 9th. Appointed in 2013 by then president Dilma Rousseff (PT), he had raised suspicions since the beginning of this week that he would leave office.

He presided over the Court for the past two years until he gave way to minister Edson Fachin last week. By law he could remain in office until 2033, when he turns 75, the age limit for public service.

During his speech, his voice cracking, the minister declared that he was prepared for the moment and that the time had come to take new directions. “I have no attachment to power and would like to live my remaining life a little longer, without the stipulations, obligations and demands of the position – with more literature and poetry,” he said.

The speech was followed by applause from colleagues. According to the minister himself, this was his last plenary session. With the vacancy, it is up to the President of the Republic Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to appoint a new tenant in the Chamber.
