Lubitsch and Pupel

• What will they fall in love with? : The Other Side of Heaven is adapted from the novel Poupelle of Chimney Town By Akihiro Nishino. The author is also an actor and comedian and discovered a passion for writing and illustrating children’s books. Published in 2016 in Japan and 2018 in France. Pupel It has sold over 700,000 copies worldwide.

The adaptation is directed by Yusuke Hirota, for whom this is his first feature film. The latter explains in the film’s press kit: “I already knew the original illustrated book. Having a young son myself, I really fell in love with the father-son story and wanted to make a film that kids could enjoy..”

On the Other Side of the Sky is a fantasy film dense, moving and full of metaphors. The feature film deals with many themes, including, of course, ecology, but also mourning, difference, and totalitarianism. All this alternating between dark scenes and positive messages.

Believe in your dreams

With his little vampire look, young Lubitsch lives alone with his mother, who is in a wheelchair and has to work as a chimney sweep. He tries to see the stars in the black sky of Chimney Town.

Because after the disappearance of his father, a young boy hopes to see the stars. And his meeting with Pupel, a garbage man born on Halloween night, will change his life and the lives of the people of this town where no one dares to look up at the sky.

A naive and lovable character who is rejected by everyone except Lubitsch. Together they will learn that you have to believe in your dreams and keep them despite the reproaches of others.

• What might bother them: The movie is quite dark and the words are sometimes difficult for little ones to understand. A few scenes may disturb them, especially the one where Lubitsch’s father is involved, as he talks about the stars.

The presence of the inquisitors, the unexplained disappearance of the father, the rejection of Pupel by the other children, the mocking of Lubitsch and his father, and the leaders allowing them to control the people through terror are all subjects that can frighten children.

However, the end of the film proves that you have to believe in your dreams and that the fear of the unknown really prevents men from moving forward and building a new world.

Pupel’s presence and his naivety also make it possible to replace somewhat harsh scenes with more amusing passages.

• What will they keep inside: On the other side of the sky is a universal tale that carries a message of hope. Despite the dark passages, this is a positive, colorful, gentle film, full of magic and wisdom.

Author Akihiro Nishino wanted to show the power of faith. Of the people who allow the government to control him, but also of the little boy who believes his father’s word at any cost.

On the other side of the sky shows that freedom of spirit and the fact that you believe in your dreams makes it all happen.

The film warns us about the dangers of pollution on our health (residents have asthma due to the smoke) and the ecosystem (they have no plants). As her illustrious boss, Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, she shows how human conflicts disappear when everyone is able to unite to defend an essential cause: the protection of nature.

A positive, exciting and hopeful story. Akihiro Nishino also explains in the press kit: “While the film was being made, the virus of the century hit the world and radically changed the course of history. 2020 year.

A year when so many people shed tears, a year when so many dreams and hopes disappeared. The world was covered in black smoke, as was the Chimney Town sky. Few managed to look up.

The Other Side of the Sky is a story of hope, of hope that we could walk through the black smoke to find that plain, big starry sky. It’s a film that makes sense to come out at this time of renewal.”
