When it comes to delivering memorable dialogue and outrageous situations and staging, few TV shows are on par with Adult Swim. rick and morty, which is nearing the start of its last and potentially best season ever. But even though fans around the world have been happy to celebrate the return of the animated hit with lines and moments from the show’s past, co-creator Justin Roiland and the other writers don’t like making jokes and references inside. rick and mortythe story itself. And in explaining the reasoning behind this approach, Roiland gave a not-so-subtle blow to the former audience giant. The Big Bang Theory.
The two rick and morty Yes The Big Bang Theory they are under the banner of Warner Bros. Television distribution, but that hasn’t stopped Justin Roiland from using the comedy starring Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik as an example of what he’s trying to avoid with the animated sci-fi series. That’s how he said it, second comicbook.com :
I feel like the smartest angle is to always try to stay true to what you think is fun. [We] I never want to be like ‘Bazinga’. We never want to do that kind of bullshit. Jokes should always sound like well-made jokes and not just references. . . . It will scare people.
Given the history of animation as a whole, when it comes to canonical storytelling making up such a small percentage, it’s understandable that Justin Roiland and others behind the scenes understand that everything rick and morty The viewer will have scrupulously retraced each episode in its entirety. As such, a casual audience member who shows up for a Season 6 episode won’t be surprised if the episode is filled with inside jokes that only veteran viewers would find value. Technically, the same goes for sitcoms. love you The Big Bang Theory which have hundreds of episodes, but live action network series obviously have a different regulation to follow.
Which does not mean that rick and morty avoid connective storytelling altogether, of course, otherwise The return of Evil Morty in the Season 5 finale It wouldn’t have meant that much to anyone who theorized it. As such, Justin Roiland doesn’t want to rely on slogans that pay homage to moments for which new viewers have no context, and therefore no Bazinga moment. There are definitely jokes that fit that umbrella, and Roiland himself recently stated the show lean more towards canonical narrative in the new season . But those elements are never meant to be the crux or the whole story or the humor.
Justin Roiland himself spoke to one of the rick and mortyThe most iconic episodes of as an example of a self-perpetuating allusion, saying:
The [is] the occasional reference now because we have – we will have an acknowledgment that Rick has turned into a pickle. Just little things here and there that we have done.
Now, it would still be fun if a Season 6 episode featured all the characters walking around saying, “I’m Pickle. [Name]even if they aren’t also pickled / human hybrid creatures with mouse bone exoskeletons? yes probably since then rick and mortyThe vocal cast can make any joke laugh. But Roiland & Co. prefers to create stories that can stand on their own without little bones, though Pickle Rick appears from time to time .
Considering The Big Bang Theory is one of the most successful sitcoms of the modern era, as well as one of the most hated – certainly has value in trying to emulate his formula. But this is for the world of multi-camera sitcoms, not the world of animated multiverses. But for sure I’d like to see what rick and morty the episode appeared to have been written by Chuck Lorre.
With the previous five seasons available to stream with a HBO subscription Max , rick and morty Season six will premiere on Adult Swim on Sunday, September 4 at 11pm ET. go to our Program of the first TV 2022 to see what other new and old favorites are on the way.
