Citing the Cybersecurity Consumer Protection Act, the band — forced to use Slipknot1.com for nearly 25 years — seeks to reclaim the URL under its name
Slipknot filed a lawsuit against the anonymous owner of the Slipknot.com domain to recover the site, which currently sells counterfeit Slipknot.com merchandise.
For nearly 25 years, an anonymous cyber attacker controlled the Slipknot URL, forcing the band to use “Slipknot1.com” as official website. Although the two sites have co-existed since 2001, “Slipknot.com” began redirecting unsuspecting fans to links for “Cheap Promotional Products” and “Costume Masks” — counterfeits of the merchandise and masks the band actually sells — making legal action necessary.
The band filed the lawsuit, obtained by Domain Name Wirein a Virginia federal court earlier this week under the Consumer Protection Against Cyberintrusion Act. The identity of the owner of the “Slipknot.com” domain remains unknown. The person — who purchased the domain in February 2001, two years after the release of the group’s debut album — is linked to the site by a post office box in the Cayman Islands.
“The domain name was registered to profit from the goodwill of the author and trick unsuspecting visitors — under the impression that they are visiting a website owned, operated or affiliated with the author — into clicking on web searches and other sponsored links,” the band’s lawyer wrote, Craig Reillyin action.
“A fan of the author or someone wishing to purchase authorized merchandise from the band would inevitably visit the website “Slipknot.com” assuming it belonged to the author and purchase the merchandise linked to the site, causing harm to the author.”
On Saturday the 18th, the pirate site was still active, offering merchandise and “Image Generative AI”:
