Swiss tennis player Simona Waltert, number 97 in the world and main favourite, won this Sunday (19th) the title of the first Rio Ladies Open, the first WTA tournament in the capital of Rio in almost a decade.

In a final played at the Techset Academy, in Barra da Tijuca, Waltert beat the French Alice Rame by 2 sets to 0, with scores of 7/5 6/2, in a duel interrupted for 30 minutes due to rain.

The result is the biggest of Waltert’s career, her first WTA level. She was coming off a triumph in a W100, the biggest tournament in the ITF series which sits just below the WTA and continues her best moment of her career: “The feeling is fantastic, actually, I don’t know what to say or think. I’m very happy with how I played this week, the work is paying off. I’m very proud. It’s my first time in Brazil and I enjoyed it from the first second when I arrived here. It was an incredible week and I can’t wait to leave. back,” said the champion.

“I will arrive in Floripa with confidence, but it will be a new week, new conditions, I will do my best. But first, I will enjoy here tonight, it’s a special moment. I didn’t have time to visit and tour Rio, I won’t have time tomorrow either so it’s a good reason to come back,” he added.

Lúzio Ramos, tournament director and CEO of MundoTênis, highlighted the importance and success of the first year of the event, which marked the return of the WTA series to Rio de Janeiro since 2016.

“We really enjoyed doing this tournament, everything went very well during the week, we could count on a wonderful team that helped organize a WTA 125 in the Marvelous City for the first time in almost 10 years. It is a very big challenge, but it inspires us a lot to continue on this path that we are developing in women’s tennis, with the WTA, with the experiences of tennis in Brazil which is our DNA at MundoTênis and for offering our players the opportunity to play in their home country and compete at the highest level and climb the career ladder. The legacy of organizing an event of this scale remains and, if it’s up to us, will continue. Let’s hold on so that next year we can come back even stronger with a tournament with more local experiences that was a success with an attached hotel, attached restaurants, family experiences.”
