Did you know that Matt Damon grew potatoes to survive in space? If some must believe it’s a joke when they read this incredible sentence, others will no doubt remember that it really is in Ridley Scott’s brilliant SF feature Alone on Mars, the big screen adaptation of Andy Weir’s bestseller.
Praised by AlloCiné viewers with a flattering average rating of 4 out of 5, the feature film Alone on Mars, a thrilling sci-fi adventure as engaging as it is funny (in which a page of the script actually went into space!), was released in French cinemas exactly ten years ago to the day. A great opportunity to quickly (re)discover it!
Alone on Mars is the story of astronaut Mark Watney, left for dead on the Red Planet by his teammates after a storm forced them to take off. But Mark survived and he is now alone, with no way out, on a hostile planet. He will have to use his intelligence and wits to try to survive and find a way to connect with Earth…
A year after Interstellar, Matt Damon is back in space stranded on Mars with help from NASA. In Robinson Crusoe mode thousands of kilometers above the earth, the actor (who had to wear costumes weighing up to 45 kilograms) gives an incredible performance, managing to move as much as make the crowd laugh.
Over 2.5 million viewers… Matt Damon wasn’t so alone on Mars!
For the purposes of the film, the planet Mars was partially recreated in a giant hangar. They used sand-like polystyrene for the ground, a few ocher rocks were placed here and there, and the film crew used a lot of red soil. Steam also seeped into the hangar to create fog and make the Martian environment even more realistic. Did you say credibility search?
Fascinating, funny, original, optimistic, moving, visually brilliant… On Mars alone, which attracted more than 2.5 million viewers to French cinemas, is incredible entertainment that is all of these at the same time. A space adventure like no other, as spectacular as it is human, rich with all the Ridley Scott knowledge you can find on the Disney+ platform!
