Chef Paloma Alves Moura, 46, died after spending hours waiting for medical attention at the Hospital do Tricentenário, in Olinda, Pernambuco. The unit is administered by the União da Santa Cruz congregation, according to the model of the Social Health Organization (OSS). According to friends, Paloma did not receive adequate care because the medical team suspected she was undergoing an induced abortion. The Public Prosecutor and the Civil Police are investigating the case.

Thaís Leal, 40, a friend who was by Paloma’s side during her hospital stay, told Folha de S.Paulo that the chef continued to bleed heavily all day while awaiting the results of a pregnancy test. “She was admitted to hospital between 7 and 8 in the morning, with a lot of pain and heavy bleeding,” Thaís told the newspaper.

Paloma was admitted to hospital with bleeding caused by uterine fibroids. Thaís reports that she arrived on site around 10am, to take turns with Paloma’s daughter as escort. “As soon as I entered I saw Paloma bleeding profusely. Throughout the day more than three sheets were used, all completely soaked in blood,” he said.

Paloma’s friends and family say that, even during the critical hours of the hemorrhage, she was not given medication or asked for a transfer. They attribute this omission to suspicion of induced abortion. Thaís said that, around 2pm, she asked for her friend to be transferred.

“She was turning purple, her mouth was pale, she was already losing a lot of blood. I asked: please move my friend, she is going to die,” she recalls. The response he received was that the transfer would only be possible after the beta HCG test results were published. “I said: but she’s not pregnant,” the friend told Folha.

After the medical examination, she was admitted to hospital, treated and tests showed a sharp drop in hemoglobin.

The hospital stated that it had requested transfer to a more complex department, but, given the clinical worsening and instability, the patient suffered a cardiopulmonary arrest. According to the institute, she was taken to the unit’s intensive care unit, where she underwent resuscitation maneuvers, but her death was confirmed around 7 p.m.
